Samuel Lim Hong Xiang, known to many as the “miracle baby” who survived a brutal acid attack at three months old, passed away on 28 June 2025 from stage 4 nasal cancer. His death marks the end of an extraordinary life defined by resilience, talent, and unwavering determination to serve others.
From Tragedy to Triumph
In June 1999, Samuel’s life changed forever when his grandmother’s domestic helper, out of jealousy, poured sulphuric acid down his throat to frame another helper. Just 17 at the time, the attacker was sentenced to eight years in jail. The injuries destroyed Samuel’s upper airway, requiring lifelong breathing and feeding tubes. Despite never tasting food or speaking normally, Samuel refused to let his limitations define him.
He stunned doctors by surviving, and later inspired many by thriving—earning stellar academic results and defying odds with his vibrant spirit. At age 13, he told The Straits Times, “I don’t hate her,” choosing forgiveness over bitterness.
Achievements Against All Odds
Samuel was a gifted student and musician. He obtained Grade 8 in piano and music theory, and Grade 9 in guzheng. He loved swimming, hip-hop dance, and badminton, participating fully in life despite his condition. In 2019, he was awarded the Asia Pacific Breweries Foundation Scholarship for Persons With Disabilities while pursuing linguistics at NTU.
In December 2024, Samuel graduated with a master’s degree in speech pathology from the University of Melbourne. By January 2025, he began working as a speech and language therapist at Thye Hua Kwan Moral Charities—his dream job.
Sudden Diagnosis And Rapid Decline
Samuel sought treatment on 14 May after experiencing a nosebleed. Although a specialist appointment was set for July, his condition worsened, prompting a hospital visit on 6 June. He was admitted immediately due to uncontrollable bleeding, severe headaches, and facial pain. Tests confirmed a diagnosis of stage 4 nasal cancer.
On 25 June, he began chemotherapy. Just three days later, he passed away, having fought bravely until the end. “He really wanted to live and refused to give up,” said his mother, Madam Tan Poh Ling.
A Life That Inspired Thousands
Samuel’s story touched not only his family but also the medical community and educators who supported him. Associate Professor Daniel Goh, who treated Samuel since infancy, described him as a symbol of boldness and perseverance. His dedication to helping others was evident—often staying up late to complete reports at work, even as his health declined.
His sister, Yong Zhen, said Samuel taught her life’s greatest lesson: “It’s not the adversity that defines us, but how we respond to it.”
A Funeral of Joy and Color
Reflecting Samuel’s cheerful nature, his funeral on 2 July was decorated with Studio Ghibli and Pokémon themes. His coffin was adorned with cartoon stickers, surrounded by colorful balloons and drawings from children he had helped. Teachers and colleagues played the violin and erhu as a tribute, and his favorite electronic keyboard and music scores were displayed.
“He wouldn’t want anyone attending to be sad,” his brother shared. “He brought joy wherever he went.”
Samuel Lim’s story is a powerful testament to the human spirit. From surviving an unimaginable attack to becoming a beacon of hope for others, he lived each moment with grace and courage. His legacy serves as an enduring reminder of resilience, compassion, and the strength of a loving community—values deeply resonant in both Singaporean and Indonesian societies.
