Multi-agency raids uncover vice, illegal workers, drink driving, and drug-related offences
A large-scale anti-crime operation across Geylang and Joo Chiat has led to 20 arrests and several regulatory investigations. Authorities uncovered a range of offences, from unlicensed massage services and drug-related crimes to immigration and traffic violations.
Wide-Ranging Operation Nets Offenders
On June 27, a coordinated operation by the Bedok Police Division, Central Narcotics Bureau, Immigration and Checkpoints Authority, and Singapore Civil Defence Force resulted in 20 arrests. Eight men and 12 women, aged between 24 and 55, were apprehended for offences ranging from drug possession and drink driving to immigration violations and unlicensed business operations.
Among them were 12 women, primarily Chinese nationals, arrested for working without valid work passes at KTV lounges and entertainment outlets. Two others were caught in nearby Joo Chiat under similar offences, which carry penalties of up to two years’ imprisonment or a fine of $20,000.
Unlicensed Massage Services and Regulatory Breaches
Hair salons along Geylang Road were a major focus. Three outlets were raided, including one previously reported by The Straits Times for suspected vice activities. Despite branding themselves as hair salons, these establishments were found offering unlicensed massage services. One salon had seven women working at the time of the raid, with beds and massage chairs hidden behind typical salon setups.
All three salons are now under investigation under the Massage Establishments Act. Offenders face up to two years’ imprisonment or a fine of $10,000. Repeat offenders may receive harsher penalties of up to five years and a $20,000 fine.
Traffic Offences and Drug-Related Arrests
Traffic Police officers conducted ring-fencing operations along Guillemard Road. Seven motorists were arrested for drink driving, including a 26-year-old male driving without a valid licence or insurance. Singapore saw a 6.9% rise in drink-driving arrests in 2024, though the number of incidents fell from 180 to 166. Alarmingly, fatal cases rose slightly from 11 to 12.
A 48-year-old male motorcyclist was also arrested for drug-related offences and possession of contraband cigarettes and e-vaporisers. A K-9 unit aided in searching his motorcycle and belongings before he was referred to the Health Sciences Authority and Singapore Customs.
Strong Message from Authorities
Superintendent Muhammad Firdaus bin Abdul Raub, Commanding Officer of Geylang Neighbourhood Police Centre, emphasized the zero-tolerance stance. “This is part of our continuous efforts to clamp down on vice and drug-related activities in Geylang,” he said, noting the operation’s importance in maintaining law and order.
Authorities are also investigating six other individuals for public entertainment license breaches. Businesses found guilty may face suspension, cancellation, or fines up to $10,000.
Cracking Down on Vice and Loopholes
This operation highlights gaps in regulatory enforcement, where businesses exploit legal grey areas by disguising massage parlours as hair salons. Despite a December 2024 report and a public $20,000 bounty by one salon denying illegal operations, recent findings prove otherwise.
The raids show a renewed and aggressive approach to cleaning up known problem areas like Geylang, which remains on the police’s list of places where new entertainment licenses are rarely approved.
The Geylang and Joo Chiat crackdown reflects Singapore’s strong stance against vice, illegal employment, and public endangerment. For neighboring countries like Indonesia, it serves as a cautionary tale on the importance of cross-agency enforcement and tight regulation. As illicit operations grow more discreet, vigilant law enforcement and clear policies are critical to public safety and social order.
