Riau Islands strengthen global coconut trade with rising exports and strategic geographic advantage

The Riau Islands (Kepri) have recorded a 28% surge in coconut exports in early 2025, reinforcing the province’s emerging role in the international coconut trade.

Strong Start to 2025

From January to May 2025, the Riau Islands Province (Kepri) saw a 28% increase in coconut and coconut-derived product exports compared to the same period in 2024. According to Indonesia’s Quarantine Agency, total export volume reached 5,728.74 tons, valued at approximately Rp18.8 billion (around SGD 1.5 million).

Herwintarti, Head of the Kepri Quarantine Office, confirmed the growth and emphasized its significance: “This reflects a positive trend in the export performance of Kepri’s coconut products,” she stated.

Diverse Product Range and Global Reach

Kepri’s coconut exports include a wide variety of products:

  • Fresh coconuts
  • Coconut water
  • Coconut oilcake (bungkil)
  • Desiccated coconut
  • Coconut milk (santan)
  • Coconut meat

These products have reached international markets including Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, South Korea, Germany, China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, underlining Kepri’s growing importance in global agricultural trade.

Recent Shipment to Malaysia

On Saturday, June 28, 2025, the Quarantine Agency approved a new export batch of 19.2 tons of coconut meat to Malaysia. Known for its nutritional value and diverse uses, coconut meat is a staple in the food, beverage, and skincare industries.

Sahat M. Panggabean, Head of the Indonesian Quarantine Agency, stressed the need for ongoing collaboration between central and local governments, businesses, and stakeholders to uphold international quality standards.

Strategic Advantage Despite Limited Land

Wakil Gubernur Kepri (Vice Governor), Nyanyang Haris Pratamura, highlighted Kepri’s geographic edge. Although the province’s land area comprises just 4% of its total territory, its proximity to key markets like Singapore and Malaysia enhances its export competitiveness.

“Kepri has immense potential in the global trade network. We must maximize this advantage,” he said.

In 2024, Kepri exported 42,649 tons of coconuts and derivatives valued at Rp396.2 billion (about SGD 31.7 million). The ongoing rise in 2025 not only solidifies Kepri’s trade position but also stimulates the local economy by encouraging investment in coconut-based industries and expanding regional plantation areas.

Strengthening Indonesia’s Export Identity

The upward trend showcases how targeted government coordination and strategic resource management can drive regional export success. For a province with limited landmass, Kepri is proving that high-value commodities like coconuts can uplift local economies and elevate Indonesia’s profile in the global agricultural market.

Kepri’s 28% growth in coconut exports underscores the province’s rising influence in global trade despite its limited land area. By capitalizing on its strategic location near major markets like Singapore and Malaysia, Kepri is successfully turning local agricultural potential into international economic value. This export momentum not only supports regional economic development but also strengthens Indonesia’s reputation as a competitive player in the global coconut industry. With continued collaboration between government bodies and stakeholders, Kepri is well-positioned to sustain and expand its export success through 2025 and beyond.
