Victim died instantly after crashing into pothole and falling under a gravel-loaded lorry
A cycling trip turned tragic for a Singaporean man who lost his life on a Malaysian road after hitting a pothole and being run over by a lorry. The fatal incident sparked calls for immediate road repairs and greater cyclist safety awareness.
Fatal Crash Along Kulai Road
On the morning of Saturday, 14 June, a 42-year-old Singaporean cyclist was fatally injured on a road in Kulai, Johor. He was part of a four-man cycling group when he struck a pothole, causing him to lose control and fall onto the road.
According to Kulai District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Tan Seng Lee, the man was then tragically run over by a lorry transporting sand and gravel. The 41-year-old Malaysian driver was reportedly unable to stop in time.
Immediate Death and Response

The cyclist suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was transported to Kulai Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The incident drew swift attention from local authorities, with the Kulai Fire Station confirming the accident in a Facebook post.
Commissioner Tan confirmed that investigations are underway under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which addresses reckless driving causing death.
Search for Witnesses and Investigation Support
Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with relevant information to step forward. Their cooperation could prove vital in understanding the exact circumstances and determining legal accountability.
Efforts are ongoing to assess if negligence or road conditions contributed to the cyclist’s death.
Minister Orders Immediate Road Repairs
Following the incident, Malaysia’s Minister of Works Alexander Nanta Linggi announced that road repairs would begin immediately. He stated that comprehensive reconstruction would follow once administrative processes were completed.
Linggi emphasized the need for cyclists to avoid heavy vehicle routes, ride at appropriate times, and always wear proper safety gear. He also expressed condolences to the bereaved family.
Road Conditions and Cyclist Safety
The tragic death has raised urgent concerns about road maintenance in Malaysia and the risks cyclists face, especially in areas where infrastructure is inadequate or shared with large vehicles.
Both Singaporean and Malaysian communities—many of whom cycle recreationally across the border—are now calling for more stringent safety measures, including proper signage, pothole monitoring, and protected cycling lanes.
This heartbreaking accident highlights a growing cross-border safety issue for cyclists between Malaysia and Singapore. For Indonesians, who frequently travel or work in the region, it underscores the critical importance of road maintenance, regulatory enforcement, and personal vigilance when navigating public roads—whether by vehicle or bicycle.
