Sunday morning turned violent in Gelang Patah, Johor, when a man stormed into a home and attempted to rob two Chinese nationals—a teenage girl and her elderly grandmother. The victims fought back but were injured in the struggle, prompting a swift police response that led to the suspect’s arrest within just three hours.
Swift Police Action Ends Violent Robbery Attempt In Johor
A robbery attempt in Gelang Patah, Johor, ended with the swift arrest of a suspect just three hours after the crime was reported. The victims—two Chinese nationals, a teenage girl and her elderly grandmother—were attacked in their home by a 33-year-old local man who demanded valuables and inflicted injuries before fleeing.
Victims Assaulted During Home Invasion
According to Iskandar Puteri police chief ACP M. Kumarasan, the incident occurred at approximately 11.30am on Sunday, June 1. The 14-year-old girl and her grandmother, in her 70s, were at home when the man entered and attempted to rob them. He allegedly choked the teenager, sparking a struggle that left both victims injured. They were later treated at a hospital.
Suspect Arrested Within Hours
Thanks to information provided by the public, law enforcement officers from the Iskandar Puteri district and Tanjung Kupang police station tracked and arrested the suspect by 2.30pm the same day. Police also seized a T-shirt and shorts believed to have been worn during the attack. The man, who has two prior criminal records, tested negative for drugs.
Investigation Under Penal Code Section 394
The case is being investigated under Section 394 of Malaysia’s Penal Code, which covers voluntarily causing hurt during robbery. If convicted, the suspect could face up to 20 years’ imprisonment, a fine, or whipping. The man is currently under a seven-day remand until June 8 to assist with ongoing investigations.
Community Cooperation Applauded
ACP Kumarasan emphasized the importance of public vigilance and community-police cooperation. “We deeply appreciate the prompt information provided by the public, which enabled us to capture the suspect within just three hours,” he stated. Authorities urge residents to report suspicious activity to the nearest police station or call the Iskandar Puteri police hotline.
