Customs officers foil smuggling attempts at Batam’s port and airport using bizarre hiding methods

Indonesian Customs officers in Batam intercepted four drug couriers smuggling over 5 kilograms of methamphetamine using deceptive and dangerous tactics. The bust highlights Batam’s growing role in international narcotics trafficking.

Meth Hidden in Waffles and Human Bodies

In late May 2025, Indonesia’s Customs Office (Bea Cukai) in Batam successfully thwarted two separate meth smuggling attempts, seizing a total of 5.370 kilograms of methamphetamine and arresting four individuals. The seizures occurred at Batam Center Ferry Terminal and Hang Nadim International Airport, according to Zaky Firmansyah, Head of Customs Office KPU Type B Batam.

The couriers, identified as TO (28, male), RB (45, female), RR (23, male), and DI (25, female), used unsettling smuggling methods. Some hid the drugs in their bodies using condoms (insert method), while another concealed meth inside the base of a waffle maker to evade detection.

The Arrests: From Malaysia to Batam

The first arrest took place on May 18, 2025, involving RR who arrived from Johor Bahru, Malaysia via MV Oceana. Customs officers noted his suspicious behavior and discovered 100 grams of meth inside his body after a medical exam at RS Awal Bros. Follow-up investigations led to the arrest of TO and RB at Hang Nadim Airport, both found carrying drugs internally as well.

All three admitted they were promised a fee of IDR 8 million (SGD 640) each upon successful delivery. The total amount of drugs seized from this group was 250 grams. They claimed they were acting under instructions from a Malaysian national.

Major Bust: 5.1 Kg in a Waffle Maker

On May 25, 2025, authorities intercepted DI at Hang Nadim Airport after her waffle maker triggered suspicion during an X-ray inspection. Manual checks revealed five hidden packets of pure meth weighing a total of 5.120 kilograms.

DI confessed she was promised IDR 70 million (SGD 5,600) for transporting the drugs to Jakarta. She had received an initial IDR 5 million (SGD 400) advance. Investigators traced the recruitment back to a contact named AR in East Java, indicating a broader domestic distribution network.

Legal Consequences and Ongoing Investigations

All four suspects are being prosecuted under Indonesia’s Narcotics Law No. 35 of 2009. They face potential life imprisonment or even the death penalty. “These methods show how desperate traffickers have become. We remain vigilant and committed to closing every loophole,” Zaky affirmed during a press briefing on June 2, 2025.

Customs authorities are increasing surveillance and cross-border cooperation, especially at entry points vulnerable to smuggling, such as seaports and secondary airports like Batam’s.

Batam: A Growing Transit Point for Narcotics

The case underscores Batam’s role as a preferred transit hub for international drug traffickers, particularly from Malaysia. With its strategic location and frequent sea and air traffic, Batam continues to be targeted by smuggling syndicates.

Zaky stressed that proactive measures and public awareness are crucial in combatting these crimes. “We call on all passengers and the public to report suspicious behavior. Collective vigilance is key to breaking these networks,” he said.

This incident highlights the persistent threat of transnational drug trafficking in Indonesia, with Batam serving as a critical entry point. For residents across Indonesia and neighboring Singapore, it reinforces the importance of coordinated efforts, strict enforcement, and regional cooperation to combat the narcotics crisis at its roots.
