A domestic dispute turned deadly in Surat Thani, Thailand, when a man’s desperate act of violence backfired — literally — leaving him dead and four bystanders injured

On the morning of Sunday, May 25, in southern Thailand, a confrontation outside a suburban home escalated into a fatal explosion. What began as a personal dispute ended with one man dead, several injured, and authorities launching a probe into the presence of military-grade weaponry and illegal drugs.

On the morning of May 25, police in Surat Thani province responded to reports of an explosion in the Tha Chana district, approximately 8am local time. According to authorities, 35-year-old Surapong Thongnak had visited the residence of his former partner, Kan-onraphat, reportedly seeking to reconcile following the end of their relationship.

Witnesses said that after his attempt was rebuffed, Mr. Thongnak produced a pair of scissors and attempted to assault the woman. Nearby residents intervened, allowing her to retreat into the house. The situation escalated shortly after.

According to Tha Chana Police Station, Mr. Thongnak returned to his vehicle and retrieved what has been identified as an M26 fragmentation grenade. He reportedly threw the device toward the group outside the home, but it did not detonate. When he approached the grenade to throw it again, it exploded in his hand, killing him at the scene.

The blast caused injuries to four individuals, including three relatives of the woman: La-or Rodkird, 73, Samart Janyang, 68, and Sayan Rodkird, 40. They were transported to Tha Chana Hospital and were reported to be in stable condition. The explosion also damaged a parked vehicle outside the property.

A search of Mr. Thongnak’s vehicle uncovered approximately 500 grams of crystal methamphetamine, according to police. The narcotic, locally referred to as “Ice,” was stored in a plastic container. Officers said the quantity indicated possible intent to distribute.

Mr. Thongnak had previously served a five-month prison sentence in 2020 for drug-related offences. Police believe he had been residing in temporary accommodation near his ex-partner’s home in the days leading up to the incident.

Community Impact and Police Response

Police have opened investigations into both the origin of the grenade and the source of the narcotics. Thailand has strict laws regulating explosive devices, and possession of military-grade weapons is prohibited outside official use. Authorities from Forensic Science Division 8 were deployed to examine the scene and collect evidence.

The incident has raised concerns in the local community. Residents of Samo Thong Subdistrict, where the explosion took place, described Mr. Thongnak as a volatile figure who had previously made unannounced visits to the home. Officers have not ruled out further charges related to the possession of prohibited items, had the suspect survived.

Domestic Disputes and Broader Risks

While the police have categorized the event as a domestic dispute, the presence of high-powered weaponry and illegal drugs has prompted broader questions about access to contraband and public safety risks. The M26 grenade is designed for combat use and rarely appears outside military contexts.

Mr. Thongnak’s mother, Ranjuan Pimdee, told Thai media outlets that she had spoken with her son earlier that morning and was unaware of any plans for violence. “I had no idea he would go this far,” she said.

The explosion in Surat Thani has highlighted ongoing concerns over access to illegal weapons and narcotics, particularly in cases of interpersonal violence. As authorities continue to investigate the origins of the explosive and the drug supply chain, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the volatile outcomes that can emerge when criminal elements intersect with unresolved personal conflict.
