Dapur 12 resident found dead after mysterious fall during early morning fishing trip.
A routine morning at sea turned tragic for a Sagulung fisherman who was found dead after reportedly falling from a pancung boat near the Batam coast. The incident has left the Dapur 12 community in shock and raised concerns over boat safety.
Fatal Fall at Sea
On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, a local fisherman from Dapur 12, Sagulung, lost his life after reportedly falling from a pancung boat while preparing to head out to sea. Witnesses and nearby residents said they heard the boat’s engine running early in the morning, but the victim, identified as a local male resident, was later found lifeless in the water.
Suspicious Boat Activity
According to local residents, the boat was already running when the incident occurred, leading to speculation that the victim may have slipped. His brother revealed that the victim could not swim.
Response and Recovery
The body was found floating near the shoreline shortly after the incident. Authorities were notified immediately, and the police, along with local marine officers, recovered the body and launched an investigation. The victim was later buried at a public cemetery in Kampung Tua Dapur 12 Sagulung.

A Familiar Risk for Fishermen
Many fishermen in Batam rely on small, manually operated boats like the pancung. While essential for their livelihood, these boats are often used without modern safety equipment or proper maintenance. This tragic incident highlights the daily risks faced by maritime workers, particularly when navigating alone at sea.
Call for Maritime Safety Reform
This tragedy has once again underscored the need for stronger maritime safety regulations for small-scale fishers in Batam and beyond. As the investigation continues, residents and authorities alike are calling for stricter boat inspection procedures and education on emergency response to prevent similar losses in the future.
The heartbreaking death of a Dapur 12 fisherman serves as a sobering reminder of the risks faced by small-scale maritime workers across Indonesia. As fishing remains a primary livelihood in coastal communities, this incident calls for urgent improvements in safety standards that could benefit regions across Southeast Asia, including Singapore’s nearby fishing industry.
