Famous Johor Bakery Expands With First-Ever Vending Machine in Singapore
From Johor Bahru’s bustling streets to a quiet corner in Singapore’s Bukit Panjang, the legendary Hiap Joo banana cake is now just a button away—thanks to a vending machine collaboration.
A Century-Old Johor Legacy Finds New Home
Founded in 1919, Johor Bahru’s Hiap Joo Bakery is famous for its banana cakes baked in traditional wood-fired ovens. Beloved by Malaysians and Singaporeans alike, the bakery regularly draws long queues. This cult-favorite treat has now landed in Singapore for the first time, via an innovative vending machine at Bukit Panjang Plaza.
The move was made possible through a partnership with food retail start-up Chef-in-Box, operated by JR Vending, which imports the cakes directly from JB every Monday and Friday.
Convenience Meets Nostalgia
The vending machine is stocked with Hiap Joo’s signature banana cakes—each box of 10 pieces is priced at S$11.90 (approximately IDR 148,750). While fresh from JB, the cakes are vacuum-packed to preserve freshness and are kept chilled in the vending machine. Customers are advised to consume them within two days after opening for best taste.
This launch is part of JR Vending’s broader goal to bring regional artisanal brands to Singapore in a way that blends tradition with modern convenience. The cakes arrive twice weekly to ensure freshness while maintaining the bakery’s renowned quality.
Public Response and Market Trends
Singaporeans have responded with enthusiasm. According to Chef-in-Box’s spokesperson, the machine has seen strong sales since its debut in April 2024. Fans of Hiap Joo are delighted by the convenience, while newcomers are eager to try the famed treat without crossing the border.
JR Vending noted that they chose Bukit Panjang Plaza due to its diverse, family-oriented crowd and proximity to Johor, making it a strategic spot for cross-border brand awareness.
Expansion and Future Collaborations
Hiap Joo’s Singapore vending machine is just the beginning. JR Vending is exploring similar collaborations with other Malaysian brands to bring more regional flavors into the city-state’s evolving snack scene. For Hiap Joo, this marks a significant milestone—spreading its century-old tradition beyond Johor while retaining its handmade, small-batch charm.
Taste That Bridges Borders
Hiap Joo’s banana cake isn’t just a dessert—it’s a cultural icon that evokes memories of childhood visits to JB, road trips, and weekend indulgences. The Singapore launch shows how nostalgic foods can travel across borders while preserving their soul, now enhanced by tech-driven convenience.
Hiap Joo’s entry into Singapore through a vending machine offers a tasty symbol of regional integration—melding Malaysia’s rich food heritage with Singapore’s modern lifestyle. This innovation brings a beloved tradition closer to Indonesian tourists, Singapore residents, and Malaysian expatriates, reinforcing how iconic flavors can continue to unite communities across borders.
