Back-to-back traffic incidents in Batu Aji and Baloi spark urgent calls for truck hour restrictions
Within just 48 hours, two separate cement truck accidents in Batam left a 9-year-old girl dead and a family car overturned with toddlers on board. Residents are now demanding strict operational limits for heavy vehicles and urgent traffic safety reforms.
9-Year-Old Dies in Cement Truck Collision at Basecamp Roundabout
A tragic accident on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at Basecamp Roundabout, Batu Aji, claimed the life of 9-year-old Adelia Syafitri. She was riding on a motorcycle with her parents—father Lubis, who was driving, and mother Ermidah—when they fell in heavy traffic around 7:00 PM. Moments later, a cement truck ran over Adelia, killing her instantly.
According to AKP Afidtya, Head of Barelang Police Traffic Unit, officers arrived promptly after receiving calls from witnesses. The motorcycle and cement truck were secured as evidence, and the case remains under investigation. “We are exploring all possible causes—driver negligence, road conditions, or vehicle error,” said Afidtya.

The family was reportedly on their way to a religious gathering at Adelia’s grandmother’s home. Witnesses said the roundabout was poorly lit and lacked traffic lights, contributing to chaotic driving conditions.
Baloi Crash: Cement Truck Hits Car With Two Toddlers Inside
Just a day later, on Sunday afternoon, May 11, 2025, a Daihatsu Sigra driven by Osman Dedelfa was hit from behind by another cement truck on Jalan Yos Sudarso, near the Baloi Regional Tax Office. The impact caused the car to flip and rotate before landing on its side.
Inside the car were Osman’s wife, mother-in-law, and two children under five. Thankfully, the children survived uninjured thanks to being held securely by the adults. Osman’s mother-in-law sustained minor injuries near her eye. “We were coming home from Nongsa when the truck hit us and fled,” Osman told local media.

Nearby drivers helped flip the car back upright and assisted the family out of the wreck. As of now, the cement truck driver has not been identified and police are still searching for the suspect.
Public Furious Over Traffic Conditions and Truck Presence
The two incidents, occurring within a day of each other, have ignited public outrage, especially in Batu Aji. Locals say Basecamp Roundabout has long been problematic due to:
- Five entry lanes without traffic lights
- Poor lighting at night
- No clear lane markings or signage
“This roundabout is chaotic every morning and night. Trucks move freely, people cut across lanes, and there’s no order,” said Fael, a Batu Aji resident. “It’s just a matter of time before another tragedy strikes.”
Citizens Demand Operational Hours for Trucks
Residents are now urging the Batam City Government and Transportation Department to regulate heavy vehicle operation hours, particularly cement trucks, trailers, and dump trucks. Suggestions include limiting operations to 10 PM – 5 AM to avoid peak traffic congestion and reduce risks to smaller vehicles and pedestrians.
Ridwan, another resident, said bluntly: “A child is dead. Do we need more lives lost before anyone takes action?” He also criticized the lack of clear traffic rules at large intersections, noting how often drivers switch lanes unpredictably.
Infrastructure Gaps Exposed by Fatality
The incidents have also underscored infrastructure failings in high-traffic areas. Basecamp Roundabout, despite being a major connector, has no active signal system. Instead, it relies on passive signage, which locals claim is ineffective given the volume and speed of vehicles passing through.
“This isn’t just about discipline—it’s about system failure,” said Ridwan. “If the government can’t control this, the public will continue to pay the price.”
The back-to-back cement truck incidents in Batam have shattered families and exposed glaring holes in traffic infrastructure and enforcement. As calls for reform grow louder, officials face mounting pressure to implement safety systems, restrict truck hours, and take visible steps to ensure that these tragedies do not become a recurring headline.
