Severe rainfall flooded multiple areas in Batam on May 5, with strong winds worsening conditions.

Hours of intense rainfall drenched Batam, Riau Islands, on Monday evening, May 5, 2025, flooding roads and neighborhoods across Bengkong, Botania, and Simpang Kabil. The downpour was accompanied by strong winds, disrupting daily life and sparking public concern.

Floodwaters inundated Ruko Pasir Putih, Bengkong, after continuous heavy rain fell around 6:00 PM WIB. The water rose to thigh-level, submerging vehicles and stopping traffic entirely. According to Batamnews.co.id, motorcycles and cars were half-submerged, with many drivers forced to abandon their vehicles.

A rider named Adi described the scene: “The traffic jam was terrible because of the flooding. Many people turned back or had no choice but to drive against traffic.” He added that flooding frequently occurs in the area whenever it rains heavily, likely due to poor drainage capacity.

Botania and Simpang Kabil Also Heavily Affected

Ulasan.co reported flooding in several high-traffic locations: Botania 1 and 2, Simpang Kabil, Raja Isa Street, Raja Ali Kelana Road, and around Basic Christian School. In many places, the water level exceeded 30 centimeters, forcing motorists to push their stalled vehicles.

Anto, a local motorcyclist, lamented the recurring problem. “It’s always like this after heavy rain—it floods almost every time,” he said while trying to restart his bike. Residents also shared images and videos online showing severe conditions across neighborhoods.

Flooding brought economic disruptions to local vendors and small business owners, particularly in Botania 1. One street vendor said he immediately rushed out as the rain intensified. “Thank God my cart was safe, but some of my goods were swept away,” he said.

Activity in key business areas slowed or stopped entirely. Pedestrians and shopkeepers were seen trying to drain water or lift goods to higher ground, hoping to minimize losses before nightfall.

During the storm, strong rotating winds swept through Batam Center, startling residents and triggering safety fears. In a video circulating online, a man in a blue raincoat was seen being knocked over by the sudden gust while parking his motorcycle near Plamo.

Eyewitness Julius, 33, described the event as shocking: “It happened so fast. The wind came in like a swirl and knocked him down in seconds.” Similar wind activity was observed in Batu Aji, with intense lightning and downpours affecting nearly all parts of Batam.

BPBD Urges Public Caution

The Batam Traffic Police quickly implemented traffic diversions near Simpang Gelael in Batam Center to relieve congestion. Meanwhile, the Batam Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) issued warnings and early alerts.

BPBD Head Irwan Chandra advised residents to stay alert. “We remind the public to be cautious, especially if they see rolling dark clouds or feel sudden swirling winds,” he stated. He urged people to seek shelter in safe structures and avoid large trees or billboards that could collapse during high winds.

Drainage and Development Issues Under Scrutiny

Locals and media have pointed to insufficient drainage as a key reason for frequent flooding in Batam. As roads and residential areas expand, the drainage system has not been upgraded proportionally. This mismatch causes water to accumulate quickly, especially in densely developed areas.

Although no casualties have been confirmed, the flooding has disrupted businesses, transportation, and daily routines. BPBD teams remain on standby as many residents worry the flooding may return with the next downpour.

The severe weather on May 5 has once again exposed Batam’s flood vulnerability. With neighborhoods like Bengkong and Botania facing frequent inundation, and strong winds now adding to the risk, residents are urging the city to upgrade its drainage systems and emergency protocols. The incident also highlights the need for regional resilience as Batam remains a vital hub for business, logistics, and tourism between Indonesia and Singapore.
