Separate accidents on April 30 and May 1 involved a bus collision and a self-skidding bus incident

Three people were hospitalised following two unrelated bus accidents that occurred over two consecutive days in Keppel and Hougang, prompting police investigations and raising public concern.

Keppel Crash Involving Three Vehicles

The first accident occurred on the evening of April 30, at the junction of Keppel Road and Cantonment Link. A bus, a car, and a motorcycle were involved in the collision. A 70-year-old eyewitness, Mr. Lu, described seeing the wreckage and a man lying on the road being helped by passers-by. The crash caused significant congestion, with one lane closed and vehicles diverted through Cantonment Link.

Motorcyclist and Car Driver Sent to Hospital

According to the Singapore Police Force (SPF), the incident was reported at 6.20 PM. Both a 27-year-old male motorcyclist and a 63-year-old male car driver were taken to Singapore General Hospital in conscious condition. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed their role in transporting the injured individuals. Police investigations into the exact cause remain ongoing.

Hougang Bus Skids Into Tree and Railing

Just hours later, on May 1 at around 5.50 AM, another accident occurred—this time along Hougang Avenue 8, in the direction of Hougang Avenue 2. An SBS Transit bus veered off course and crashed into a tree and a metal railing near Montfort Secondary School. Witness Mr. Lin, 67, observed the crash as he was returning home from work.

Bus Driver Fell Ill Before Skidding

The 68-year-old bus driver, the only person injured in the Hougang incident, was sent to hospital conscious. SBS Transit later confirmed the driver had suffered breathing difficulties, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. Fortunately, there were no passengers on board at the time of the crash. SBS Transit expressed concern for the driver’s health and extended their support during his recovery.

Investigations Underway for Both Cases

In both incidents, SPF has confirmed that investigations are ongoing. The Keppel crash raised issues of multi-vehicle traffic safety, while the Hougang incident highlighted health risks for public transport workers. As of now, no charges have been filed, and authorities continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding both crashes.

Though no fatalities occurred, the back-to-back nature of these incidents has stirred public discourse about road safety and health monitoring protocols for bus drivers. Commuters and industry observers alike are urging for reinforced measures to prevent future occurrences, including driver health checks and early warning systems in public buses.

The two bus incidents in Keppel and Hougang underscore the importance of ongoing vigilance in public transport safety—both in traffic operations and driver health. As investigations continue, authorities and operators must work together to ensure safer commutes for everyone across Singapore’s roads.
