Driver arrested after kindergarten boy found unconscious in van parked near school for nearly five hours

A five-year-old boy died in Taman Bukit Indah, Johor, after being left unattended inside a school van for nearly five hours on May 1, prompting a police investigation into suspected child negligence.

Child Found Unconscious in Vehicle

The tragic discovery occurred around noon on May 1, 2025, when a five-year-old kindergarten student was found unresponsive inside a school van in Johor’s Taman Bukit Indah. According to Iskandar Puteri District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner M Kumarasan, the boy had boarded the van at approximately 7:30am but was never escorted into the school. Instead, he was left inside the vehicle as temperatures rose.

Emergency services were alerted after the boy was found unconscious. Despite efforts to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead and sent to Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Bahru for a post-mortem. The 56-year-old van driver was arrested the same afternoon at around 2:40pm and is now under a seven-day remand order to assist with investigations.

No Criminal Record, Drug Test Clear

Police confirmed the suspect had no prior criminal history and tested negative for drugs. However, the case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of Malaysia’s Child Act 2001, which addresses neglect and abandonment leading to harm or death. If convicted, the penalties can include significant jail time and fines.

Incident Sparks Public Outcry

The death has triggered widespread concern and outrage, particularly over the safety standards and accountability of school transportation providers. The public is demanding stricter protocols, such as child headcounts and mandatory safety checks, to prevent similar tragedies. The case underscores the critical need for vigilance when handling young children during daily commutes.

Government Expected to Review Transport Policy

Child welfare and education authorities in Malaysia are likely to revisit existing guidelines on school van operations following the incident. While school transportation remains a widely used service, especially in suburban areas, loopholes in operational oversight have come under intense scrutiny in the wake of this tragedy.

Community Grieves, Demands Accountability

Local residents and child rights advocates have expressed grief and frustration. For the affected family, the loss is immeasurable. As the investigation continues, many hope that reforms will follow to ensure that this devastating incident serves as a catalyst for improving safety practices across the nation’s childcare and transport sectors.

The heartbreaking loss of a young child in Johor has reignited calls for systemic change in how Malaysia regulates school transport services. As grieving communities seek justice, the government now faces increasing pressure to enforce stricter safety measures, ensuring no parent endures such a tragedy again.
