A 78-year-old woman became the victim of a snatch theft while playing Pokémon Go at 1:20 AM in Toa Payoh Rise, Singapore, losing valuables worth over S$3,000 in a shocking attack.

The incident occurred on April 24, 2025, at 1:20 AM, when the elderly woman, armed with five mobile phones, a portable WiFi router, and a Pokémon Go Plus device, ventured out alone to catch Pokémon. While engrossed in the game, her sling bag, containing valuables worth more than S$3,000, was forcefully snatched by a stranger.

Police Quickly Identify and Arrest Suspect

Through swift follow-up investigations and surveillance footage review, officers from Tanglin Police Division identified the suspect as 30-year-old Muhaimin Bin Hairul Azzat. He was arrested the same day and charged in court on April 26 with snatch theft under Section 356 of the Penal Code.

According to charge sheets, the woman’s S$10 sling bag held an iPhone 15, four Samsung Galaxy phones, a wallet, bank cards, a Pokémon Go Plus device, and a portable WiFi router. The thief’s actions resulted in significant financial loss and emotional distress for the victim.

Authorities reiterated their commitment to zero tolerance for bold crimes. Police advise the public to stay alert, avoid carrying multiple high-value items openly, and immediately report suspicious activities. Witnesses are encouraged to observe and remember key physical traits of suspects to assist investigations.

Popular Gaming Spots Attract Players and Criminals Alike

Locals noted that the Toa Payoh Rise area often sees groups of people playing Pokémon Go late at night. The popularity of mobile games has inadvertently created new vulnerabilities, particularly for elderly players carrying expensive devices in public places.

If convicted, Muhaimin faces a prison term of between one and seven years, with the possibility of caning. Singapore’s strict penalties reflect the government’s ongoing efforts to maintain public safety and discourage violent opportunistic crimes.

This incident serves as a reminder of the need for increased caution among vulnerable groups when outdoors at night. With mobile gaming communities remaining active around the clock, ensuring personal safety must be prioritized alongside recreation.

The shocking robbery of an elderly Pokémon Go player in Toa Payoh highlights rising concerns about nighttime public safety in Singapore. Strengthened vigilance, responsible gaming habits, and community cooperation are essential to safeguarding both local and visiting players in an increasingly mobile-driven society.
