Multiple cabinet members arrive in Batam to reaffirm national commitment to local growth and reform

Indonesia’s central government reaffirmed its commitment to Batam’s development as top ministers visited the city on April 23, 2025, focusing on infrastructure, legal reform, and social welfare.

Batam has long been a strategic hub in Indonesia’s Riau Islands, bridging trade and labor mobility between the archipelago and neighboring countries like Singapore and Malaysia. Amid rising demands for equitable development, the central government is showing renewed attention to Batam’s urban and economic growth by dispatching top-level officials.

On April 23, 2025, a delegation of ministers and vice ministers landed in Batam, signaling significant national attention. The group included Coordinating Minister for Law and Human Rights, Prof. Yusril Ihza Mahendra; Minister of Women Empowerment and Child Protection, Arifah Fauzi; and Vice Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), Dony Oskaria.

Minister Yusril’s visit renewed focus on legal structures and public service at Indonesia’s border zones. His presence emphasized Jakarta’s interest in ensuring effective governance and justice systems in fast-developing regions like Batam.

Minister Arifah Fauzi’s agenda centered on advancing the rights and protection of women and children. Her visit to Batam reinforces the Ministry’s vision to decentralize gender and child policy implementation beyond Java.

Vice Minister Dony Oskaria gave his full support to BP Batam’s plans to expand Batu Ampar Port and Hang Nadim International Airport. The developments aim to increase Batam’s logistics capacity and global competitiveness.

Batam Mayor Amsakar Achmad and Deputy Mayor Li Claudia Chandra welcomed the visits with optimism. “This isn’t just an honor — it’s a signal to keep pushing harder across every sector,” Amsakar said. Both officials stressed the importance of government synergy to build Batam’s future.

These ministerial visits signal a stronger, more connected Batam — primed for collaboration and growth. Improved infrastructure and governance could reduce cross-border logistics friction, enhance trade flows, and create new business opportunities just an hour away from Singapore.
