PNS’s parked car broken into near Batam’s Accelace shops; suspect arrested in Tiban
A civil servant in Batam fell victim to a brazen daylight break-in that cost him cash, phones, and official documents. The suspect, a repeat offender, was arrested just days later.
Civil Servant Targeted in Broad Daylight
The incident occurred on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, around 11:30 a.m. when Joni (48), a government employee with the Ministry of Public Works, returned to his parked Toyota Yaris in front of Billiard Tron, Batam Kota. He found his car window shattered and his belongings — including IDR 9 million in cash, two mobile phones, ATM cards, and important documents — were missing.
Eyewitnesses, including a nearby worker named Abi, described a scene of panic as Joni, still in his civil servant uniform, realized his car had been broken into. He immediately left the scene to report the incident to the police, prompting swift action by the Lubuk Baja Police.
Rapid Investigation and Arrest
By Saturday, April 19, 2025, police had tracked and arrested the suspect, identified as 52-year-old Marasutan, in the Tiban area of Sekupang. Authorities recovered the motorcycle used during the crime and confirmed the suspect’s method involved using a modified T-wrench to smash car windows and grab valuables within seconds.

Method and Motive Behind the Crime
According to AKP Debby Tri Andestian of Barelang Police, the suspect acted opportunistically, not through surveillance. He used the T-wrench to shatter a side window, pushed it inward, and snatched whatever valuables were visible inside. The crime was not targeted but random — a hallmark of previous offenses attributed to the suspect.
Marasutan is reportedly a known repeat offender, or residivist, with a history of similar crimes. Police are now expanding their investigation to determine if he is linked to other break-ins across Batam in recent months.
Police have reminded the public not to leave valuables inside unattended vehicles. As Batam develops into a bustling city, such crimes can escalate without heightened public awareness and proper vehicle security measures.
This incident underscores growing security concerns in Batam’s urban zones. While police responded swiftly, it’s a stark reminder of the importance of preventive measures. The suspect’s arrest provides closure, but reinforces the need for stronger vigilance and enforcement to deter future opportunistic crimes.
