Authorities launch joint raid after viral clip shows inmates partying with suspected drugs and alcohol
A video allegedly showing prisoners at Pekanbaru’s Class IIA detention center partying with music, alcohol, and possible drug use has triggered public outrage and an official crackdown from law enforcement.
Viral Video Sparks Nationwide Alarm
A short video making rounds on social media appears to capture a group of inmates dancing to DJ music inside the Pekanbaru Class IIA Detention Center. Some are seen lounging with phones, while bottles and a white-piped tool — suspected to be drug paraphernalia — are visible, suggesting illicit drug use.
Reacting swiftly to the viral footage, Pekanbaru Police Chief Kombes Jeki Rahmat Mustika ordered a joint raid involving local police and prison officials. “There must be no space for drugs, especially in correctional facilities meant for rehabilitation,” he stated on April 15. The crackdown is aimed at rooting out narcotics and preventing systemic abuse inside penitentiaries.
Official Investigation Underway
Maizar, Head of the Riau Corrections Agency, confirmed that a formal investigation is underway. The facility in question, Rutan Sialang Bungkuk, is being scrutinized to determine whether the inmates or staff were involved in breaching prison rules. He emphasized that any violations would be met with firm disciplinary action, including for any complicit prison personnel.
Outrage Over Apparent Lax Security
The incident has ignited public debate over the state of Indonesia’s correctional oversight, especially given visible access to mobile phones, alcohol, and suspected drugs within a supposedly secure facility. DJ Music and Alleged Drug Use
The video, which shows inmates swaying to heavy bass music and using what looks like a bong, raised suspicions of methamphetamine consumption. Alcohol bottles scattered across the room further fueled speculation that the party was premeditated and facilitated from inside.
As of press time, the Pekanbaru prison administration has yet to issue a formal public statement. However, law enforcement and corrections officials have pledged to follow up with comprehensive raids and enforce stricter controls to restore the integrity of correctional institutions.
