No foul play suspected after concerned neighbours discovered body in Sumang Walk public housing unit.
A 77-year-old man was found dead in his Punggol flat after neighbours noticed a foul smell and reported his prolonged absence. Police investigations are ongoing.
The man, who had been living alone in a rental unit at Block 326A Sumang Walk, was last seen over a week ago. On April 9, concerned residents contacted the police after detecting a strong stench and failing to reach him.
Neighbours Alerted Authorities After Odour Discovery
Worried after not seeing their elderly neighbour for days, a 46-year-old food delivery driver who lives on the same floor decided to check on him. After knocking on the door without response, he and another neighbour opened the wooden door and were hit by a strong odour coming from the flat.
Realising something was wrong, they called the police. Officers arrived at the scene and found the man lying motionless inside. He was pronounced dead shortly after.

Lived in Isolation for Over Five Years
Residents told Shin Min Daily News that the deceased had lived alone for more than five years. While he was generally polite and would greet others, he kept to himself and shared little about his personal life.
One neighbour remarked that no one ever visited him during holidays or special occasions, reinforcing his isolated lifestyle.
Previous Suicide Attempt and Alcohol Issues
Neighbours revealed that the man had a troubled past. At the end of 2024, he reportedly attempted to take his own life but was rescued after intervention from authorities.
Another neighbour recalled an incident where the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) had to assist the man, who was found intoxicated and lying in the corridor outside his unit late at night.
Police Confirm No Foul Play Suspected
The Singapore Police Force confirmed they were alerted to an unnatural death case at around 5:05pm on April 9. A 77-year-old man was found unresponsive in a flat at Block 326A Sumang Walk and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary investigations suggest no foul play, though further enquiries are still underway.
This incident draws attention to the loneliness and challenges many elderly Singaporeans face, especially those without family support. It highlights the importance of community awareness and care for the vulnerable. As Singapore continues to age, both locals and neighbouring countries must examine the systems in place for elder care and social connection.
