Suspect changed attire after Beach Road hotel theft; police recovered part of the stolen cash

A 36-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly stealing two wedding money boxes containing red packets worth around S$50,000 at a wedding reception in a hotel along Beach Road on April 5.

Wedding receptions in Singapore often involve guests presenting red packets filled with cash. These are typically collected in boxes and placed in prominent areas of the event venue. Theft from such boxes, though rare, can cause significant financial and emotional distress to newlyweds and their families.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) said they were alerted to the theft at approximately 12:49pm on Saturday, April 5. The alleged thief reportedly took two wedding gift boxes filled with red packets containing a total of about S$50,000.

Following swift investigation by officers from the Central Police Division, the suspect was identified through CCTV footage and arrested two days later, on April 7. Police confirmed that S$3,000 in cash had been recovered and seized as part of the ongoing investigation.

Preliminary findings revealed that the man had likely premeditated the theft, including planning his escape and changing into different attire shortly after committing the act, in an attempt to avoid detection.

The police have charged the man under Singapore’s Penal Code for theft. If convicted, he faces up to three years in prison and a fine. His court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, April 9.

Authorities emphasized the seriousness of the offence, particularly in the context of a celebratory and communal event like a wedding. “The police have zero tolerance towards such brazen acts and will not hesitate to act against those who blatantly disregard the law,” SPF stated.

While the majority of the stolen money remains unaccounted for, investigations are still ongoing to determine whether any accomplices were involved and to trace the remaining funds.

The case has sparked public discussion online, with many expressing shock at the theft occurring during such a personal and joyous occasion. Some netizens called for better security measures at weddings and large gatherings where cash gifts are involved.

The incident serves as a stark reminder that even moments of celebration can become targets for calculated crime. As weddings in Singapore often involve significant monetary gifts, this case may lead to heightened security awareness at private functions. The swift response from law enforcement highlights the importance of vigilance and technology in upholding public trust.
