Suspect arrested within 30 minutes after allegedly stealing watches, shirts, and chocolates from airport shops
A 37-year-old Indian man was arrested after allegedly shoplifting luxury items from several outlets in Changi Airport’s transit zone, following swift action from Singapore police stopping his escape.
On March 23, 2025, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) was alerted to a missing handbag in the Changi Airport transit area. Within 30 minutes, officers identified and detained the suspect, who was preparing to depart Singapore. Surveillance footage and ground inquiries were critical in apprehending the individual.
Suspect Linked to Multiple Outlets
Preliminary investigations revealed that the man had allegedly stolen items from at least four different retail outlets. The stolen goods included watches, shirts, chocolates, and other accessories, with an estimated total value exceeding S$1,670. The suspect was linked to each case through surveillance footage and store reports.

Legal Consequences Await
The man has been charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft in a dwelling. If convicted, he could face up to seven years in jail, a fine, or both. The police emphasized that they take a firm stance on such offenses, especially in high-security areas like Changi Airport.
Not an Isolated Case
This case marks at least the fifth shop theft reported at Changi Airport this year. Previous cases involved other individuals, including a woman caught stealing perfume bottles and an Australian national involved in a similar theft. These incidents have raised renewed concern about theft in transit areas.
Security Reinforced Through Collaboration
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to preventing such incidents through close cooperation with airport retailers, enhanced surveillance, and rapid response protocols. The SPF stressed that shoplifting undermines public trust and the sense of security that Singapore’s airports are globally known for.
The incident highlights the importance of constant vigilance and robust enforcement in one of the world’s busiest airports. As transit zones remain attractive targets for opportunistic crimes, swift law enforcement and tight surveillance continue to act as deterrents—reassuring travellers and locals alike of Singapore’s commitment to safety and order.
