A joyful wedding in Lingga turns to chaos after an old wooden pier gives way

A wedding celebration in Lingga Regency, Riau Islands, turned chaotic when dozens of guests fell into the sea after an aging wooden jetty collapsed under their weight.

The incident occurred on Sunday, April 6, 2025, in Dusun Tajur Resun, Desa Baran, Senayang District. The guests were leaving the venue after the wedding ceremony when the wooden dock gave way. The structure, weakened by time and overburdened with people, crumbled into the sea in front of horrified onlookers.

Old Dock, Overload, and Collapse

The pier, reportedly the main access point for guests attending the wedding in Desa Baran, had long shown signs of decay. As crowds gathered at the jetty to depart, the supporting wooden beams finally gave in, causing dozens to plunge into the waters below. Amateur video footage shared by local resident Rika Ramadhan captured the dramatic collapse and the ensuing screams of panic and fear.

The harbour waiting room at Tajur Resun, Senayang sub-district, Lingga district, collapsed on Sunday (6/4/2025) at 11.47 am.

Eyewitnesses described the sequence of events as abrupt. “Everything was fine until people started gathering to leave. Then suddenly, the dock just fell apart,” Rika said. The structure’s frail condition, combined with the sudden load of many guests, appears to have caused the failure.

Injuries and Swift Community Response

While there were no fatalities, several attendees suffered minor injuries and were taken to the nearest community health center for treatment. Indra Gunawan, head of Desa Baran, confirmed that the incident was under control and praised the community’s quick response. “Thankfully, all victims are safe. Locals acted swiftly to assist in the evacuation,” he told reporters.

The panic especially affected women and children, many of whom were visibly shaken and in tears after witnessing loved ones fall into the sea. Residents helped pull people from the water within minutes, averting a potentially deadly tragedy.

Trauma Amid Celebration

What should have been a day of joy ended in tears for many, as the sudden accident left deep emotional scars. “Some people were inconsolable, crying at the sight of family members in the water,” said Indra. The emotional trauma, especially among children, was significant, even though everyone was rescued.

The incident also ignited criticism over the condition of rural infrastructure in Lingga. Locals questioned why vital public facilities like docks are allowed to degrade without timely maintenance, particularly when they serve as the only access route in many island communities.

A Wake-Up Call for Local Governments

The collapsed jetty has underscored the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades in the region. With many such structures still in use despite advanced age and poor maintenance, the risk of future tragedies remains high. Community leaders and residents are now urging local authorities to take decisive action to assess and reinforce other similar facilities across Lingga and beyond.

The near-tragedy in Senayang reveals how overlooked public infrastructure can turn celebrations into disasters. For visitors and cross-border travelers, especially those connecting via Riau Islands, the safety and readiness of transport access points will be a growing concern.
