High-tech detectors deployed to assess gas risks and ensure responder safety post-inferno

In the wake of a devastating gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya, a private firm has stepped forward to assist investigators by loaning advanced gas detection equipment.

On Tuesday morning, a gas pipeline operated by Petronas erupted in flames, shooting 30-metre-high fire columns and reaching temperatures of 1,000°C. The inferno displaced over 1,200 people and damaged more than 140 homes. Investigations are now underway to assess the cause and prevent further hazards.

Cutting-Edge Devices Support Safety Protocols

MSA Safety, an American safety equipment manufacturer, has provided over 10 gas detectors to support authorities during the investigation. The devices include eight Altair 4XR personal gas detectors and several Altair 5X multi-gas detectors, each designed to monitor hazardous gas levels in confined and open environments.

Certified trainer Nur Fadhilah Mohd Khalid stated that the Altair 5X is equipped with a pump for direct sampling within a 10-foot radius, ideal for high-risk zones. In contrast, the Altair 4XR absorbs gas near its surface using diffusion mode. Both models trigger alarms upon detecting harmful gases, prompting immediate evacuation.

Proven Tools From Past Disasters

Speaking from the incident control post on April 6, Nur Fadhilah noted that these detectors have been in use since 2008 and were crucial during the Sungai Kim Kim chemical pollution incident in 2019. The tools are widely trusted by major industrial players like Petronas for their ability to detect key gases including oxygen, hydrogen sulfide, and carbon monoxide.

The fire, which erupted at 8:10am, was finally extinguished after nearly eight hours. It left 87 homes completely uninhabitable and partially damaged 148 others. Residents from 308 families were relocated to temporary shelters as recovery operations commenced.

Investigation and Recovery in Progress

Authorities continue to monitor gas levels to secure the area for responders and residents. The deployment of advanced detection equipment is part of broader efforts to ensure the area is safe for entry and prevent future leaks.

Efforts to identify the cause of the explosion are ongoing, with safety officials emphasizing the need for technological support and coordinated emergency response. The loaned devices are expected to remain in use for as long as the investigation requires.

This incident underscores the importance of industrial safety preparedness and collaboration between public authorities and private firms. The deployment of gas detectors provides not only vital support for investigators but also reassurance for nearby residents and travelers.
