75-year-old Singaporean man loses consciousness near ATM at Batam Center Ferry Terminal
A 75-year-old Singaporean man tragically passed away shortly after arriving at Batam Center Ferry Terminal, sparking urgent efforts from medical personnel and authorities.
The incident took place on April 1, 2025, during a routine arrival of passengers from Singapore. The man had just disembarked from the MV Majestic Supreme ferry before collapsing in the arrival hall.
The victim, identified as SA, reportedly collapsed in front of an ATM machine near the arrival hall of Batam Center Ferry Terminal at approximately 12:00pm, just 15 minutes after disembarking from a ferry that departed from Singapore. Eyewitnesses, including port officers and fellow passengers, were shocked as the man lost consciousness suddenly without prior indication of distress.
Port authorities immediately administered first aid and rushed him to the quarantine room for emergency treatment. Due to his deteriorating condition, the medical team quickly transferred him to Awal Bros Hospital in Batam for advanced care. Unfortunately, the man was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

According to Bripka Raden Rama, Head of the Batam Center International Port Post, the man showed no external injuries and had a known history of medical conditions, which is believed to be the cause of death. “Yes, it’s true a Singaporean passenger fainted and was declared dead at Awal Bros Hospital,” Bripka Rama confirmed.
The incident occurred so quickly that bystanders had little time to react. It drew attention to the importance of emergency preparedness at international entry points. The terminal’s response was praised for its immediate action, although authorities acknowledged the need to further enhance on-site medical facilities.
As of this report, officials are working to contact the deceased’s family members in Singapore to handle the repatriation process. The incident has prompted calls for closer health screening measures for elderly travelers and the expansion of emergency infrastructure in Batam’s ports.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of robust medical readiness at major transportation hubs. Authorities are expected to assess protocols to better protect elderly passengers and ensure swift emergency response during similar health incidents.
