Victim alerted police after real-time bank notifications revealed fraudulent purchases in transit area
A 30-year-old Indonesian man will be charged with theft and cheating after allegedly stealing a fellow passenger’s wallet on a flight to Singapore and using her debit card to shop at Changi Airport.
The incident took place on March 16 during a Singapore-bound flight. Both the suspect and the female victim had stored their belongings in the same overhead compartment. The victim discovered the theft shortly after disembarking when she received bank alerts of unauthorised transactions.
Theft Discovered Through Banking App Alerts
At approximately 4:55am on March 16, the female passenger reported her wallet missing to police after noticing unauthorised purchases made with her debit card in the transit area of Changi Airport. The wallet, originally stored in the overhead compartment during the flight, contained several personal items including the debit card used for fraudulent transactions.

Swift Police Response and Arrest
Thanks to immediate alerts from her banking app and a quick report to authorities, officers from the Airport Police Division were able to act swiftly. Through ground investigations and a review of CCTV footage within the terminal, the suspect’s identity was established, and he was apprehended within one hour—before he could leave Singapore.
Further investigations revealed that the suspect and the victim were acquainted and had shared the same overhead compartment during the flight. Although details of their relationship have not been disclosed, police confirmed that the familiarity between them likely provided the opportunity for the theft to occur unnoticed during the journey.
Use of Stolen Debit Card in Airport Retail Outlets
After disembarking, the man allegedly used the stolen debit card at multiple retail stores within the transit area of the airport. Assistant Commissioner of Police M. Malathi praised the victim’s alertness, stating that enabling real-time notifications from banking apps greatly enhances timely crime reporting and enforcement actions.
The man is set to be charged on March 27 with theft and cheating. If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to 13 years and caning. Singapore authorities have reiterated their firm stance against such crimes, particularly those occurring within transit hubs that rely heavily on international trust and security.
The rapid police response and effective surveillance at Changi Airport underscore Singapore’s zero-tolerance approach to theft, especially in high-traffic international zones. This incident reinforces the value of digital alerts and vigilance in safeguarding personal assets during air travel.
