One Body Identified, the Other Awaiting Identification as Community Mourns Loss
A tragic maritime incident claimed the lives of two Batam fishermen after their boat capsized in stormy conditions near Nongsa waters on Monday, March 24, 2025.
The men had ventured out on the evening of March 23 to check fish traps when their small vessel was overturned by strong winds. One victim, identified as 30-year-old Risky, was found floating in the sea the following evening.
Bodies Found Near Empty Boat
The discovery began when fellow fishermen spotted a drifting sampan with no one aboard. A short search led to the grim recovery of two bodies in close proximity. Dedi, a fisherman who joined the search, confirmed both victims were part of the local fishing community. According to him, Risky and his companion likely drowned after their boat capsized in high winds while retrieving fish traps.
Community Response and Unanswered
QuestionsRisky’s body has been returned to his family for burial, while the second victim remains unidentified at Bhayangkara Hospital in Batam. The incident has shaken the Bengkong Fishermen’s Collective (FKUB), whose members expressed deep sorrow and called for greater safety awareness during the monsoon season. Community spokesperson Dedi emphasized the need for preparedness, noting the frequency of sudden storms in the region.

Ongoing Concerns Over Safety Infrastructure
The tragedy has reignited discussions among local fishermen about the lack of accessible emergency response infrastructure in Batam’s outer waters. Many have called for increased availability of life vests, waterproof communication devices, and routine weather advisories targeted at small-scale fishing operators. “We need more than condolences,” one FKUB member said, urging the government to prioritize safety for artisanal fishers.
The Nongsa incident mirrors previous maritime accidents in nearby areas, where fishermen often brave dangerous conditions without adequate support. As sea weather becomes increasingly unpredictable, communities are appealing for localized training and safety drills, especially in areas like Bengkong and Nongsa where fishing remains a primary livelihood. Calls for better enforcement of small boat safety regulations have also grown louder in the aftermath.
As Batam’s fishing communities reflect on this tragic event, the incident underscores the need for heightened maritime safety measures and emergency readiness. For travelers and regional observers, it is a solemn reminder of the dangers faced by those working offshore in unpredictable weather.
