Strategic location near RTS Link aims to serve locals, Singaporeans, and medical tourists alike

Thomson Medical Group has announced plans to develop a 300-bed multi-specialty hospital in Johor Bahru, positioning itself to ride the momentum of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) and boost Malaysia’s medical tourism potential.

Backed by Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim, Thomson Medical will construct the hospital—named Thomson Hospital Iskandariah—on a 1.5-hectare site within a 10-hectare landbank. The hospital will focus on oncology, orthopaedics, and obstetrics and gynaecology, with completion slated for 2030. The move is part of a broader strategy to position Johor as a major healthcare hub in Southeast Asia.

Group CEO Dr Melvin Heng said the project, which had experienced years of delays, was revived following the announcement of the JS-SEZ. Construction is expected to begin in late 2025 or early 2026. Originally estimated at RM1.2 billion (S$359.7 million), costs are now projected to rise by up to 30% due to post-pandemic inflation and material price hikes.

Target Market: Local and Cross-Border

While Johor residents will remain the hospital’s primary focus—projected to make up 60–65% of patients—Dr Heng noted that Singaporeans could comprise up to 10% of its clientele. Its location near the RTS Link, Causeway, and Batam ferry terminal makes it an accessible option for patients from both Singapore and Indonesia.

In addition to the main facility, Thomson Medical is seeking partners to develop a second healthcare block adjacent to the hospital. Potential collaborators include private medical groups, device manufacturers, and clinical research firms. This collaborative model aims to deepen the region’s healthcare ecosystem as other providers like IHH Healthcare and KPJ Healthcare also expand into Johor.

Thomson Medical’s investment in Johor underscores the region’s rising profile as a cross-border healthcare destination. With strategic infrastructure, growing demand, and regional collaboration in play, the JS-SEZ may soon transform Johor into a Southeast Asian medical powerhouse bridging Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia.
