Community Support Drives Educational Opportunities for Young Palestinians
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong praised the community-led initiative at a recent Iftar event, highlighting its role in shaping brighter futures for Palestinian students.
Essential Background on the PSI Scholarship Fundraiser
The Palestinian Scholarship Initiative (PSI), launched in October last year, aims to sponsor Palestinian students in Singaporean universities. The initiative, co-chaired by former Nominated Member of Parliament Anthea Ong and former minister Professor Yaacob Ibrahim, has set a target of S$400,000 to support two students annually. The funds, managed by Singapore-based crowdfunding platform Ray of Hope, will cover tuition fees, lodging, and other related expenses.
As of March 11, over 900 individual donations have contributed to the S$200,000 raised so far. Donations ranged from S$3 to S$20,000, showcasing the wide-reaching support from the Singaporean community. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong attended an Iftar event on March 18 to show solidarity, emphasizing Singapore’s ongoing commitment to supporting Palestinians through both community-driven efforts and government programs.Anthea Ong expressed gratitude for the public’s generosity, stating, “While we may not change the world with this contribution, we sincerely hope PSI can make a world of difference to one or two young Palestinian scholars each year.”

Strong Interest from Palestinian Students
Over 150 young Palestinians have shown interest in the PSI scholarship, with 15 applying to the National University of Singapore, seven to the Singapore Management University, three to the Singapore University of Social Sciences, and two to the Singapore Institute of Technology. Applicants have expressed aspirations to study fields such as pharmaceutical science, business management, artificial intelligence, and software engineering.
One 23-year-old applicant shared, “I am excited about the opportunity to study in Singapore and contribute to the global conversation on technology and innovation. This scholarship will help me achieve my academic and professional goals while allowing me to contribute meaningfully to society.”
Next Steps for PSI Scholarship Recipients
The scholarship applications will be awarded only to students who successfully gain admission to participating universities. The first group of PSI scholars is expected to begin their studies in the academic year 2025, following the university application deadline on March 19.
In addition to financial support, PSI is exploring a home host program with volunteers, though funds have already been allocated for on-campus lodging. This initiative aligns with Singapore’s broader efforts, including the Enhanced Technical Assistance Package (ETAP), which has increased its annual scholarship offerings to Palestinian officials from three to ten.
The PSI initiative underscores Singapore’s dedication to fostering global education and humanitarian support. By providing life-changing opportunities to young Palestinians, this scholarship program not only impacts individuals but also strengthens international ties and promotes long-term development. The overwhelming community support demonstrates Singaporeans’ commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need.
