A sudden windstorm wreaks havoc in Batam, toppling billboards, damaging buildings, and injuring one person.
Strong winds struck Tiban Indah, Batam, causing severe damage to infrastructure and public facilities. The unexpected windstorm uprooted trees, tore off roofs, and toppled multiple billboards, one of which nearly crushed a passing car. The incident left one person injured and forced authorities to conduct emergency cleanup operations to restore order.
A violent windstorm swept through Tiban Indah, Batam, on March 17, 2025, sending residents into panic as winds intensified without warning. What began as a regular afternoon with clear skies quickly turned into a disaster scene, as strong gusts of wind escalated into a destructive storm.
By 1:08 PM WIB, witnesses reported hearing a loud roaring sound, followed by flying debris, bending trees, and shaking structures. Within seconds, a massive billboard near Simpang Lampu Merah Tiban Indah swayed violently before crashing down, nearly crushing a moving car beneath it. The driver managed to escape, but the force of the impact left the vehicle badly damaged.
Another billboard collapsed near a busy intersection, forcing motorists to halt their vehicles, while businesses in the area shut down temporarily due to the hazardous conditions.
Buildings and Infrastructure Suffer Heavy Damage
The destructive winds didn’t stop at billboards—several buildings and businesses sustained damage, particularly in the Tiban Princess area. According to Anto, the Head of Supervision and Enforcement at Batam’s Public Order Agency (Satpol PP), the storm came without warning, wreaking havoc across the district.
“The strong winds was sudden and powerful. It tore off building roofs, toppled billboards, and damaged fences. The damage in the Tiban Princess area is quite severe,” Anto stated.
A residential property suffered major structural damage as its roof and walls collapsed, while fences of several commercial establishments were knocked down. In addition, a metal barrier from a nearby business was sent flying across the road, blocking traffic and forcing authorities to redirect motorists to alternative routes.
One Person Injured as Billboard Falls on Pedestrian

Amid the chaos, one person was injured when a falling billboard struck them. The victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, sustained head injuries and was immediately rushed to RSBP Batam (Badan Pengusahaan Hospital) for treatment.
Eyewitnesses recalled the terrifying moment when the billboard fell. Audrey, a resident of Tiban Ayu, described the experience:
“It happened so fast. The wind suddenly became so strong, and before we knew it, the billboard was crashing down. I saw people running for cover—it was really scary.”
Authorities confirmed that the injured victim remains in stable condition but is undergoing further medical observation.
Emergency Response and Cleanup Operations Underway

Following the storm, emergency response teams from Batam Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) and local police forces were deployed to affected areas. Their primary focus was to clear debris, assess damage, and restore traffic flow.
“We are working to remove fallen structures, repair damaged buildings, and ensure public safety,” said a BPBD spokesperson.
Firefighters and public safety officers were also mobilized to assist in removing wreckage from roadways and residential areas. Authorities have warned residents to stay alert, as more extreme weather conditions are forecasted in the coming days.
The strong winds that struck Tiban Indah highlights the increasing threat of unpredictable extreme weather in Batam. Although no fatalities were reported, the incident caused significant structural damage, traffic disruptions, and left one person injured.
Local authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, especially as weather forecasts indicate the possibility of more storms. In response, officials are discussing better disaster preparedness measures, including stronger building regulations and improved early warning systems.
