A Singaporean driver lost control, crashing into a JB eatery, then refused a second alcohol test.

A Singaporean man was arrested in Johor Bahru after crashing his vehicle into a Mookata restaurant and a parked car on Wednesday, March 5, 2025. The incident, which took place around 10:50 pm on Jalan Dato Abdullah Tahir, was captured on video and quickly went viral. The 46-year-old driver failed to control his Suzuki vehicle, ramming into the restaurant’s wall, chairs, and tables before reversing into a parked Honda HRV. Although no injuries were reported, the driver refused to take a second breathalyser test, leading police to escort him to Sultanah Aminah Hospital for toxicology screening.

The accident took place in the heart of Johor Bahru, an area frequented by both locals and tourists. The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) swiftly responded to the scene, taking the suspect into custody and initiating legal proceedings. If convicted under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, the man could face severe penalties, including up to two years in jail, a fine between RM10,000 and RM30,000, and a two-year driving ban.

The Incident: A Dramatic Restaurant Crash

According to Johor Bahru South District Police Chief ACP Raub Selamat, the Singaporean driver lost control of his vehicle, sending it crashing into the Mookata restaurant’s exterior. The impact damaged the shop’s wall, as well as multiple chairs and tables. Instead of regaining control, he reversed his vehicle, crashing into a parked Honda HRV. The incident was immediately reported to the authorities, who arrived at the scene to manage the situation and prevent further disruption.

Following his arrest, the driver was subjected to an initial breathalyser test. However, when police requested a second test, he refused to cooperate. This refusal raised suspicions of alcohol involvement, prompting officers to transfer him to Sultanah Aminah Hospital for further toxicology testing. While the results of the hospital tests remain undisclosed, legal proceedings against the driver have commenced under Malaysia’s strict road safety laws.

A video of the incident has gone viral on social media, sparking strong reactions from both Malaysians and Singaporeans. Many expressed frustration over reckless driving incidents involving foreign motorists in Johor Bahru, a city that sees high traffic from Singaporean visitors. Authorities have reiterated the importance of responsible driving, especially given the potential dangers posed to pedestrians and restaurant patrons in high-footfall areas.

The case is currently under investigation, with law enforcement officials awaiting toxicology results to determine the exact circumstances leading to the crash. Should toxicology results confirm alcohol consumption, the driver may face harsher penalties. PDRM has issued a warning to all motorists, emphasizing that reckless driving and failure to comply with police procedures will not be tolerated.

The incident highlights growing concerns over traffic safety in Johor Bahru, particularly with the influx of foreign drivers. As authorities proceed with legal action, the case serves as a reminder of the severe consequences of reckless driving. The outcome of the investigation will determine whether stricter measures are necessary to ensure road safety in the region.
