Police arrest Tanjungpinang officer and wife in major narcotics case linked to Batam drug smuggling.

A shocking revelation has surfaced as a Tanjungpinang police officer and his wife were arrested for their alleged involvement in an international drug network. Their capture followed a Batam customs drug bust, exposing a larger web of illegal narcotics trafficking.

Authorities in Batam, Indonesia, have intensified their crackdown on narcotics trafficking after uncovering a major syndicate linked to law enforcement personnel. The latest operation, which started with Batam Customs seizing 185 grams of methamphetamine at the Batam Center Port, has led to the arrest of Brigadier SS, an officer from Tanjungpinang Police, along with his wife AA. The couple was apprehended in a rented room in Sei Panas, Batam, on March 5, 2025.

The Director of Narcotics Investigation at Polda Kepri, Kombes Pol Anggoro Wicaksono, confirmed that SS and his wife are suspected of being the key players in the syndicate. “We are still investigating their role and potential international links,” he stated on March 10, 2025.

The Director of the Riau Islands Narcotics Investigation Directorate, Kombes Pol Anggoro Wicaksono, confirmed SS’s arrest, stating that investigations are still ongoing. “Yes, it’s true. The case is currently under further development,” he said on March 10, 2025.

Meanwhile, Evi Octavia, Head of the Batam Customs and Excise Information Division, revealed that the seized drugs originated from Malaysia, reinforcing the suspicion of an international smuggling syndicate operating in the region.

Drug Courier’s Arrest Leads to Police Officer

The breakthrough in this case began when a drug courier, identified as PG, was caught attempting to smuggle methamphetamine out of Batam. PG was intercepted at Batam Center Port, where customs officials discovered two packets of methamphetamine hidden in his underwear. During interrogation, PG revealed that he had obtained the drugs from SS and AA. This crucial confession led investigators to the couple’s hideout in Batam, where they were arrested.

Kabid Humas Polda Kepri, Kombes Pol Zahwani Pandra Arsyad, stated, “The involvement of a police officer in a drug syndicate is alarming. If not dismantled, this network could expand into a full-fledged international operation.”

Tanjungpinang Police Chief, Kombes Pol Hamam Wahyudi, has confirmed SS’s arrest but emphasized that the case is now fully under Polda Kepri’s jurisdiction. “We are following due process and will enforce disciplinary actions if necessary,” Hamam said on March 11, 2025.

He also reiterated his commitment to upholding the integrity of the police force. “We continuously remind our officers to avoid illegal activities that harm the institution and the public,” he added.

Consequences and Next Steps

SS now faces both criminal charges and internal disciplinary action. If found guilty, he could be permanently dismissed from the police force. The Indonesian National Police (Polri) has emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards officers involved in criminal activities.

“This is a serious violation, and SS will face the full consequences of his actions,” Pandra stated.

Meanwhile, authorities continue to investigate whether SS and AA were operating independently or had connections to a larger international narcotics syndicate. More arrests may follow as the case unfolds.

This case serves as a critical warning for border security agencies in Singapore and Southeast Asia. The proximity of Batam to Singapore makes it a key transit point for illegal substances, emphasizing the need for enhanced cooperation between law enforcement agencies.

Singapore’s strict drug enforcement policies remain a deterrent, but this incident highlights the challenges of cross-border smuggling networks. Strengthening intelligence-sharing and joint operations will be essential to prevent similar incidents from escalating.
