High-tech autogate system integrates with global databases to improve border security and efficiency.
Batam Centre International Ferry Terminal has implemented cutting-edge face recognition technology to enhance security and streamline immigration processes. The automated autogate system, linked to global law enforcement databases, aims to identify individuals on watchlists and prevent unauthorized crossings.
The Batam Centre International Ferry Terminal has upgraded its border control measures with the installation of Face Recognition Cameras. This state-of-the-art autogate system is directly connected to the Directorate General of Immigration, the International Police Organization (IPO), and INTERPOL databases.
The system boasts an accuracy rate of 80-90%, allowing authorities to quickly identify individuals on watchlists. Batam’s Immigration Office Chief, Hajar Aswad, emphasized the significance of this development.
“With the implementation of Face Recognition technology, we expect to improve immigration efficiency and strengthen international border security in Batam,” Aswad stated on March 1, 2025.
How the Autogate System Works
Passengers passing through the autogate system experience a swift verification process, taking only 15-20 seconds per individual.
As Kepri Ombudsman Representative Lagat Siadari explained, the system automatically scans passport data and facial features, cross-referencing them against blacklists and security alerts. If a match is found, an instant alert is sent to immigration officers and security supervisors stationed at control rooms and inspection counters.
“This system revolutionizes immigration control, ensuring that security checks are thorough without compromising efficiency,” Siadari remarked.
The autogate system was not without challenges. In late 2024, some passengers faced entry denials in Malaysia, as their departure data was not registered in immigration systems. This issue led to diplomatic discussions between Indonesian and Malaysian immigration officials, resulting in a system update in November 2024 that resolved the discrepancy.

While Ombudsman Kepri praised the initiative, Siadari stressed that public awareness of the autogate’s functionality must be improved.
“Although instructional videos are available on ferries, a broader public education campaign is needed to ensure seamless use of the system,” he urged.
Enhancing Public Awareness
Despite its technological advantages, the autogate system requires greater public understanding to prevent confusion and complaints.
Siadari warned that a lack of awareness could lead to unnecessary travel delays, potentially harming Batam’s image as a modern travel hub.
“This autogate represents Indonesia’s commitment to high-tech border control. However, if passengers don’t understand how to use it, frustration and negative perceptions will follow,” he cautioned.
Authorities plan to increase public outreach efforts, including step-by-step user guides and additional on-site assistance.
The introduction of Face Recognition technology at Batam’s ferry terminal marks a significant step forward in border security. While the system enhances safety and efficiency, public education remains a key factor in its success. With improved awareness and continued technological advancements, Batam’s immigration control is set to become one of the most sophisticated in the region.
