Rapid rollout positions Malaysia as a global leader in 5G technology and digital transformation.
Malaysia has solidified its position as a frontrunner in 5G network deployment, with 82.4% coverage of populated areas and a remarkable surge in adoption rates. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching revealed that the number of 5G users has more than doubled in just one year, signaling the country’s swift digital transformation.
As global demand for ultra-fast connectivity rises, Malaysia’s aggressive push toward full 5G adoption has gained international recognition. Spearheaded by Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), the rollout has surpassed key milestones, ensuring broader access to next-generation mobile technology. The government aims to leverage this infrastructure to improve digital services, including healthcare and smart city development.
Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching announced that as of December 2024, Malaysia’s 5G network had expanded to 82.4% of all populated areas, making it one of the fastest-growing 5G infrastructures worldwide. The adoption rate surged to 53.35%, a dramatic rise from 24.6% in the previous year. These figures highlight Malaysia’s successful efforts in integrating 5G technology into everyday applications, particularly in healthcare, business, and education.
Johor, a key state in Malaysia’s economic expansion, has benefited significantly from this technological progress. The state’s 4G coverage has now reached 99.9%, ensuring seamless connectivity for residents and businesses alike. The government has identified Johor as a crucial hub for 5G-driven industries, particularly with its proximity to Singapore and its role in the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).

5G’s Role in Healthcare and Digital Services
During the closing ceremony of the Future Health 4 All (FH4A) program, Teo emphasized how 5G technology is revolutionizing healthcare. The increased adoption of digital monitoring tools and AI-powered screening services is expected to enhance patient care and provide faster, more accurate diagnoses. The government aims to integrate 5G-driven health solutions across hospitals and rural clinics to bridge accessibility gaps.
Beyond telecommunications, Malaysia is also focusing on media governance. Teo addressed the recent passing of the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) Bill 2024, urging media industry players to support its implementation. She noted that this legislation had been in discussion since 1973 and marked a historic step in establishing a transparent media regulatory framework.
The Future of 5G in Malaysia
With Malaysia’s digital infrastructure expanding rapidly, industry experts anticipate further advancements in 5G technology. Discussions are already underway about transitioning to 5.5G, which will bring even lower latency and higher speeds. The government has also launched incentives to attract private sector investment in telecommunications, ensuring that Malaysia remains a leader in Southeast Asia’s digital transformation.
Malaysia’s aggressive 5G rollout is reshaping industries and setting new benchmarks for digital connectivity. With over 82.4% coverage and rising adoption rates, the country is well-positioned to lead Southeast Asia in digital transformation. The integration of 5G into healthcare, business, and governance signals a future where high-speed connectivity becomes an essential component of daily life.
