President Trump backs Elon Musk’s sweeping government overhaul as Cabinet members react with caution.

During his first official Cabinet meeting of his second term on February 26, 2025, President Donald Trump openly challenged his team, asking if anyone was unhappy with Elon Musk’s aggressive federal reforms. Musk, who leads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) but is not a Cabinet member, has initiated drastic cost-cutting measures, including mass layoffs and slashing federal programs. His actions have been met with both applause and growing dissent among administration officials.

President Trump’s first Cabinet meeting of his second term was anything but conventional. As the meeting began, Trump wasted no time in reinforcing his support for Musk’s drastic government overhaul. “They have a lot of respect for Elon,” Trump said, referring to his Cabinet members. “Some disagree a little bit, but for the most part, I think everyone’s not only happy, they’re thrilled.”

Trump then took things further by jokingly challenging the room: “Anybody unhappy with Elon? If you are, then we’ll throw them out of here.” The comment prompted applause at varying levels, though some Cabinet members remained visibly cautious.

Despite Musk’s significant influence, he holds no official government position. Nevertheless, his presence at the meeting underscored his expanding role in reshaping federal operations, particularly through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which he has positioned as the spearhead of cost-cutting and downsizing efforts.

DOGE’s Cost-Cutting Mission and Growing Concerns

Under Musk’s leadership, DOGE has claimed to have saved $65 billion in taxpayer money through mass firings and the elimination of various federal programs. His policies include a directive requiring federal employees to justify their job functions weekly via email—failure to respond could result in termination.

While Musk portrays these measures as necessary to eliminate inefficiencies, opposition has begun to mount. Some federal agencies, including the FBI, have advised employees to ignore Musk’s directives, calling them “unauthorized and unenforceable.” This pushback suggests internal divisions within the administration, even as Trump publicly defends Musk’s role.

Kash Patel, the FBI Director, was among those who reportedly resisted Musk’s policies. During the meeting, Musk acknowledged the backlash but doubled down on his approach, stating, “This is about accountability. People getting paid for not working is theft from taxpayers, and we won’t tolerate it.”

Cabinet Members’ Reactions—Reluctant Compliance?

While Trump asserted that his Cabinet was “thrilled” about Musk’s involvement, the atmosphere in the room suggested a more complex reality. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick led a slow clap in response to Trump’s question, while Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard hesitated before joining in. Small Business Administrator Kelly Loeffler clapped while appearing distracted, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio managed only a single clap with a stiff smile.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. visibly shifted in his seat as Musk spoke, while other officials exchanged glances that suggested some discomfort. While none openly opposed Musk, the body language in the room reflected a level of unease about the billionaire’s growing influence over government operations.

As Musk’s government overhaul gains momentum, legal experts and political analysts have raised concerns over the extent of his authority. While Trump has fully embraced Musk’s aggressive reforms, legal challenges could threaten their implementation.

Democratic lawmakers have begun questioning whether Musk’s directives, particularly the mass firings, violate federal labor laws. “This is not efficiency; this is reckless dismantling,” said Maryland Representative Kweisi Mfume, who led a protest outside the Capitol, holding a sign reading “Department of Government Evil” with a large red X crossing out the words.

Additionally, Musk’s claim that DOGE had saved $65 billion came under scrutiny when investigative reports revealed significant accounting errors. For instance, an $8 billion cut at Immigration and Customs Enforcement turned out to be an $8 million reduction. Three different $655 million cuts at the U.S. Agency for International Development were, in reality, a single cut erroneously counted three times.

With mounting legal scrutiny, the future of Musk’s federal overhaul remains uncertain.

The first Cabinet meeting of Trump’s second term has made one thing clear: Elon Musk is playing a significant, albeit unofficial, role in shaping government policy. While Trump’s unwavering support for Musk signals a shift toward a more corporate-driven governance model, it also raises critical questions about accountability and oversight. The implications of this partnership extend beyond the U.S., as other nations watch closely to see whether Musk’s radical cost-cutting measures will set a new precedent for government efficiency—or result in administrative chaos.
