Construction progresses steadily, with track installations reaching Woodlands by July 2025

The Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link is now 50% complete, with rail system installations progressing steadily. The highly anticipated cross-border project is set to ease congestion between Malaysia and Singapore, with full operations expected by the end of 2026. Officials confirmed that track installations will be completed by July 2025, marking a major milestone in the development.

The RTS Link, a 4km rail system connecting Johor Bahru’s Bukit Chagar station to Singapore’s Woodlands North station, aims to significantly reduce congestion on one of the world’s busiest border crossings. The project, jointly developed by Malaysia’s Prasarana and Singapore’s SMRT Corporation, has made significant progress, with 50% of the rail systems completed. RTS Operations (RTSO), the operator of the line, stated that track installations, which began in September 2024, have reached 65% completion at the Wadi Hana depot in Johor Bahru. Officials anticipate completion of all trackwork by July 2025.

Work on the rail infrastructure has been progressing efficiently, with installations extending from Bukit Chagar station towards Singapore. The next phase involves system integrations, including traction power, signaling, and communications, which will commence in March 2025. RTSO’s project director, Zahrin Abdul Gani, emphasized that system testing and integration will peak in the third quarter of 2026, ensuring the project remains on schedule for passenger service by the year’s end.

The RTS Link will feature eight train sets manufactured by China’s CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive. These four-car trains will run at peak frequencies of 3.6 minutes, accommodating up to 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction. The first train set has already been assembled and tested at the Zhuzhou factory in China’s Hunan province, with officials reporting steady progress on rolling stock development.

While trackwork on Malaysia’s side is advancing, Singapore has also made significant progress, with over 80% of its civil infrastructure completed. The remaining work includes architectural installations, roadworks, and immigration facilities. The viaducts on the Malaysian side have been completed, while fit-outs for the Wadi Hana depot and Bukit Chagar station are underway. System installations will continue throughout 2025, ensuring seamless operations between both countries.

RTSO CEO Ahmad Marzuki Ariffin confirmed that extensive testing will commence once all rail systems are installed. Meanwhile, discussions on ticket fares are ongoing, with Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke stating that pricing details will be disclosed closer to the launch date. Officials have highlighted that determining fare structures involves considerations from both governments, making the process complex.

To accommodate the RTS Link’s operational needs, a specialized depot is being built at Wadi Hana, covering 5.7 hectares. The facility will house and maintain the train fleet, featuring seven tracks designated for various maintenance functions. Innovative engineering solutions, such as corrosion-resistant components, are being implemented to enhance durability, given the project’s proximity to saltwater. The construction team has successfully installed 1.3km of tracks at the depot, with additional segments progressing rapidly.

The Johor Bahru-Singapore RTS Link remains on track for its scheduled 2026 launch, promising a transformative shift in cross-border travel. As both nations push forward with construction and system integration, the project stands as a testament to strong bilateral cooperation. The high-capacity rail system is expected to enhance daily commutes, boost economic exchanges, and set a new standard for cross-border connectivity.
