29-year-old man receives 15 years in prison for heinous sexual crimes against his stepdaughter.

In a shocking case that has drawn widespread attention, a 29-year-old Singaporean man was sentenced to 15 years in prison and 12 strokes of the cane for raping his 11-year-old stepdaughter and coercing her into filming intimate moments between him and her mother. The case highlights severe issues of child abuse and the urgent need for protective measures in familial settings.

The case unfolded between November and December 2022 when the accused committed multiple acts of sexual violence against his stepdaughter while living with her family in a one-bedroom flat. The victim’s mother was unaware of the abuse until it was revealed by the victim’s brother in early 2023.

The timeline of events illustrates a disturbing pattern of abuse. The family dynamics were complicated; the victim slept on a sofa while her mother shared a mattress with the accused. Following an incident where the victim accidentally interrupted her parents, the accused retaliated by sexually assaulting her. Despite her discomfort, the victim felt powerless to refuse his advances due to fear of repercussions.

In November 2022, the accused escalated his abuse by instructing the victim to film him engaging in sexual acts with her mother. This manipulation left the young girl feeling relieved at first, believing it would prevent further assaults against her. However, it also showcased the depth of psychological trauma inflicted upon her.

The victim confided in her brother about the abuse in December 2022, who encouraged her to speak up. Yet, fearing it would hurt their mother, she hesitated. It wasn’t until May 2023 that the abuse came to light after a concerned tuition teacher noticed self-harm marks on the victim’s arm and sought help from a social worker. This intervention ultimately led to a police report being filed against the accused.

During sentencing on February 24, 2025, Justice Aidan Xu condemned the accused’s actions as “heinous” and “depraved,” emphasizing how he had robbed his stepdaughter of her innocence. The judge expressed hope for the victim’s recovery and acknowledged the crucial role played by educators and social workers in safeguarding vulnerable children.

This case is a chilling reminder that child abuse can occur in any environment, even within the family, which is traditionally considered a safe haven. It highlights the critical need for increased awareness and vigilance, encouraging individuals to recognize and report signs of abuse. The incident also underscores the importance of implementing more robust systems of support for victims, ensuring they have access to resources and safe spaces to disclose their experiences.

The long-term impact on the victim is profound, and the community must rally to support her healing journey. This case should serve as a catalyst for change, prompting a collective effort to protect children and hold perpetrators accountable. By fostering a culture of open communication and support, Singapore can strive to create a safer environment for all its young residents and send a strong message that such heinous acts will not be tolerated.
