Commuters’ improper use of emergency features leads to service disruptions and inconveniences.

On February 12, 2025, a group of commuters on Singapore’s East-West Line misused the emergency communication button after failing to alight at their intended station, causing unnecessary delays and highlighting a concerning trend in public transport etiquette.

The incident occurred when a group of approximately 15 adults and children attempted to disembark at Lakeside MRT station. Due to their lack of urgency, six members of the group failed to alight before the train doors closed. In response, a woman from the group pressed the emergency communication button, demanding that the doors be reopened. This action resulted in the train halting its journey towards Chinese Garden MRT station, causing delays for other passengers.

The Incident Unfolds

On the morning of February 12, a sizable group comprising parents, children, and staff from an infant school boarded the East-West Line. As the train approached Lakeside MRT station, the group attempted to exit through a single door without haste. This leisurely approach led to six individuals, including a man, two women with children, and a staff member, being trapped on the train as the doors closed.

A Questionable Decision

In a bid to rectify their oversight, a woman from the group activated the emergency communication button. Over the intercom, she insisted that the staff reopen the doors immediately. Despite being advised to wait, another woman pressed the button repeatedly, exacerbating the situation. The train eventually resumed its journey to Chinese Garden MRT station, where the stranded members disembarked and boarded a train heading back to Lakeside.

The Ripple Effect

This misuse of the emergency system caused delays not only for the passengers on that particular train but also for subsequent services along the line. Fellow commuters expressed frustration, noting that such actions display a lack of consideration for others and disrupt the efficiency of the public transport system.

SMRT Trains President, Lam Sheau Kai, addressed the incident, emphasizing that the emergency communication button is designed for genuine emergencies, such as medical issues, security threats, or accidents. He stated, “We take a serious view of this irresponsible act that causes delays to train services, affecting many other commuters.” Lam urged passengers to use the emergency features responsibly and highlighted that misusing them can lead to fines of up to S$5,000 under the Rapid Transit Systems Regulations.

A Broader Issue

This incident is not isolated. There have been reports of commuters misusing emergency features for non-critical reasons, leading to unnecessary delays and resource allocation. Such actions underscore the need for increased public awareness and education regarding the appropriate use of emergency systems within public transport.

The misuse of emergency features in Singapore’s MRT system poses significant challenges. It not only disrupts services but also undermines the safety protocols designed to protect passengers. It is imperative for commuters to understand the gravity of using emergency systems and to reserve them for genuine crises. Public education campaigns and stricter enforcement may be necessary to curb this troubling behavior.
