Residents of Nagoya Permai Housing Complex in Batam were left stunned after a thief, disguised as a ride-hailing driver, stole a pet dog on the night of 4 February 2025. The suspect, wearing a helmet and ojol (online motorcycle taxi) jacket, pretended to be a delivery rider before unfastening the dog’s chain and making a swift escape.

The suspect unfastened the dog’s chain while pretending to be engaged in a delivery. Once the leash was removed, the thief grabbed the dog and quickly left the scene, leaving no time for intervention.

Authorities have noted that pet thefts are on the rise, with thieves likely reselling stolen pets. This adds to Batam’s increasing theft cases, where not only motorcycles and valuables are targeted but now even pets are being stolen from homes.

Pet owners are urged to be more cautious, especially at night. Suggested security measures include:

  • Keeping pets indoors at night
  • Installing locked cages or fenced enclosures
  • Setting up surveillance cameras to monitor surroundings
  • Avoiding leaving pets unattended in open areas

Local authorities are investigating the case and urging residents to report suspicious activity. Officials have advised homeowners to increase home security to deter further incidents.

This case serves as a reminder to take extra precautions when keeping pets in outdoor spaces. It also highlights the importance of home security measures and staying alert in residential areas. As Batam continues to develop as a regional hub, concerns over rising theft cases emphasize the need for increased vigilance, not just for vehicles and valuables, but also for pets.
