Two Arrested in 3.2kg Methamphetamine Smuggling Operation
Indonesian customs authorities have thwarted a smuggling attempt involving 3.2kg of methamphetamine at Batam’s Hang Nadim International Airport. Two suspects, including a minor, were apprehended while attempting to transport the illicit drugs to Balikpapan, East Kalimantan.
On January 22, 2025, Batam Customs and Excise confirmed the arrest of two individuals, identified as F (21) and A (17), for attempting to smuggle 3.2kg of methamphetamine. The suspects, who traveled from Aceh, were detained after customs officers detected suspicious packages inside their luggage at Hang Nadim International Airport’s domestic departure terminal.
The suspects were allegedly part of a larger drug trafficking network, with links to Aceh-based operators RX and RZ. Investigations revealed that the drugs were meant for distribution in Balikpapan, with the smugglers promised Rp60 million (S$4,980) per kilogram as payment.
Suspicious Luggage Leads to Arrest
The case unfolded when X-ray scans detected anomalies in the baggage of both suspects. Customs officers immediately intervened, escorting the individuals to a screening area where the contents of their luggage were examined.

Methamphetamine Found Hidden Among Personal Belongings
Upon inspection, two crystal-like packages were found concealed within suspect F’s suitcase, weighing 1,065 grams each, while suspect A carried a similar package. Preliminary drug tests confirmed the presence of methamphetamine, prompting immediate legal action.
Drug Network Traced to Aceh-Based Syndicate
Authorities determined that the smuggling operation was orchestrated by Aceh-based traffickers RX and RZ, who arranged for the suspects to collect the drugs in Batam before flying to Balikpapan. The operation was coordinated by a middleman known as “Swallow”, who handed over the illicit substances.
Payment Promises and Travel Logistics
The traffickers were promised Rp60 million (S$4,980) per kilogram smuggled, but had only received a Rp2.5 million (S$207) down payment. Their travel expenses, including airfare and accommodations, were covered by the syndicate.
Following their arrest, both suspects underwent urine tests, revealing that F tested positive for methamphetamine use, while A was negative. The case has been handed over to the Riau Islands Police for further investigation, as authorities work to track down the remaining members of the trafficking network.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenge of drug smuggling through Indonesia’s transit hubs. The case reinforces the need for heightened airport security and international cooperation to combat drug trafficking networks operating across Southeast Asia. For Singapore and regional authorities, this underscores the risk of cross-border drug movements.
