Johor police refute claims of bribery at checkpoint after viral image sparks controversy.

Johor police have dismissed allegations of bribery involving traffic officers near the Causeway, following the circulation of a viral image on social media. A thorough investigation was conducted, but no evidence of misconduct was found. Authorities have warned against spreading false information, stating that legal action may be taken against those responsible.

A photo posted on Facebook on January 16, 2025, suggested that a Johor traffic officer had accepted money from a motorist near the Causeway checkpoint leading to Singapore. The image, shared in a Singaporean travel advisory group, quickly gained traction, prompting Johor Bahru Selatan police to launch an investigation.

Johor Bahru Selatan police chief ACP Raub Selamat stated that the allegations were taken seriously, but no evidence had been found to support the claims.

CCTV Footage and Witnesses Examined

The alleged incident was reported to have taken place between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM on January 16, approximately 500 meters from the Sultan Iskandar Building, where four officers were on duty conducting traffic enforcement against queue cutting.

Investigators reviewed CCTV footage from the area, but no proof of bribery was detected. Efforts were also made to identify witnesses, including the individual who captured the viral photo.

Officers Deny Bribery, Summonses Issued

During the investigation, the four officers involved denied any wrongdoing. Official records confirmed that 69 summonses were issued for traffic violations during the enforcement operation.

ACP Raub stated, “No officers were found to have solicited or accepted money during the operation.”

Johor police have strongly warned the public against spreading unverified claims that could damage the reputation of law enforcement. Authorities stated that legal action could be taken against individuals who disseminate false or misleading information.

“Strict action will be taken if credible evidence of misconduct emerges, but at present, no such evidence has been found,” ACP Raub added.

Public Urged to Report Any Evidence

Authorities have encouraged any witnesses with credible information regarding the allegations to report directly to Johor Bahru Selatan District Police Headquarters or contact ASP Nazrul Idham Abdullah at 07-2182222.

The incident highlights concerns over public trust in law enforcement, particularly at high-traffic border checkpoints. However, with no concrete evidence found, the case underscores the importance of verifying claims before spreading information online. Singaporean motorists traveling to Johor Bahru are advised to stay informed through official sources and report any suspicious activities through the proper channels.
