Police arrests disrupt syndicate that used paint-splashing to intimidate debtors.

Johor police have dismantled a loan shark syndicate following the arrest of four suspects, including a woman, involved in criminal intimidation through paint-splashing tactics. The group targeted Malaysian workers in Singapore, coercing them into repaying high-interest loans.

In a coordinated operation on January 1, Johor police apprehended four suspects linked to a loan shark syndicate that intimidated borrowers with paint vandalism. The syndicate primarily targeted Malaysians working in Singapore, offering unlicensed loans with exorbitant interest rates.

Johor Police Chief Datuk M. Kumar announced the arrests of four individuals aged 17 to 46, following raids in Johor Baru and Selangor. Items seized included mobile phones, paint containers, and threat notes.

Intimidation Tactics and Syndicate Operations

The syndicate advertised loans on platforms like Facebook and TikTok, transferring funds before formalizing agreements. Borrowers unable to meet repayments faced threats, including paint splashing on their homes.

Malaysian Workers in Singapore Targeted

The group specifically targeted Malaysian workers in Singapore, using Singapore-registered accounts for transactions. This cross-border element added complexity to their operations.

The arrests helped resolve 11 cases across Johor, including in Johor Baru, Iskandar Puteri, Kulai, Batu Pahat, and Pontian. Two suspects tested positive for methamphetamine.

The suspects face charges under Sections 427, 506, and 507 of the Penal Code. Police urge the public to avoid engaging with online loan ads and report suspicious activities.

For Singaporeans and Malaysians, the dismantling of this syndicate highlights the importance of vigilance against financial scams. Enhanced cooperation between law enforcement agencies ensures safety and discourages illegal activities.
