Unpaid Covid-19 Subsidies Leave Johor Poultry Farms Struggling

Johor’s poultry farmers are grappling with delayed government subsidies totaling over RM2 million, promised during the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite adhering to application processes, 11 affected farmers claim they are still awaiting payment after three years. Datuk Seri Dr. Wee Ka Siong has pledged to mediate with the Agriculture Ministry to address the issue.

Johor’s poultry industry, a key contributor to Malaysia’s food supply chain, was heavily impacted by pandemic-induced economic measures. In 2022, the government imposed ceiling prices on chicken and eggs, promising subsidies to offset losses. However, these subsidies remain unpaid, putting the livelihoods of small and medium-scale farmers at risk.

Over RM2 million (approximately SGD 600,000) in subsidies for 11 Johor poultry farmers remain unpaid. The subsidies were meant to cover losses from July to December 2022.

Farmers claim they followed all application procedures, including adhering to standard operating procedures. The Agriculture Ministry, however, cited issues such as incorrect bank accounts and incomplete applications for rejecting claims.

The lack of subsidies has severely affected farm operations, making it difficult for farmers to sustain their businesses. They have submitted 29 appeals to the Agriculture Ministry without success.

Datuk Seri Dr. Wee Ka Siong met with the Johor State Small and Medium Poultry Farmers Association to understand their plight. He pledged to bring the matter to the attention of the Agriculture and Food Security Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, for resolution.

The subsidies were part of measures to support farmers during the economic downturn caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The continued delay highlights systemic inefficiencies in subsidy disbursement.

This issue underscores the importance of addressing regional food security challenges. Johor’s poultry industry plays a crucial role in cross-border food supply chains, and resolving these subsidy delays could stabilize market conditions.
