Malaysia emerged as the top travel destination for Singaporeans in 2024, with buses becoming the favored mode of transport. redBus, a leading bus ticketing platform, reported a record 180,000 seats booked by Singapore-based travelers, highlighting a shift towards sustainable, affordable, and convenient travel options.

 

Singapore’s cross-border travel landscape underwent a transformation in 2024, driven by rising interest in affordable and eco-friendly options. redBus, the largest bus ticketing platform globally, revealed that Malaysia routes dominated bookings, with millennials and Gen Z leading the demand for flexible and sustainable travel.

 

redBus reported that 70% of Singapore’s bus bookings in 2024 were for Malaysia. Popular destinations included Johor Bahru (45% of trips), Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, Genting Highlands, and Seremban, showcasing Malaysia’s enduring appeal for accessible and affordable getaways.

Millennials and Gen Z Shape Trends

Travelers aged 21–30 accounted for 40% of redBus users, emphasizing the preference for cultural and scenic experiences. Younger Singaporeans are drawn to bus travel for its affordability, group travel convenience, and flexibility in planning regional trips.

 

Expanding Horizons in Thailand

While Malaysia remained the primary destination, interest in Hat Yai, Thailand, saw an uptick. Singaporeans sought diverse travel experiences beyond traditional locations, signaling a growing appetite for exploring Southeast Asia.

 

redBus also facilitated over 15,000 ferry bookings, partnering with operators like Sindo Ferry and Batam Fast. This addition supported seamless travel to Indonesia, broadening regional options for Singaporean travelers.
