Trade group urges clarity on incentives, projects, and infrastructure for the economic zone.

The Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) promises to enhance economic cooperation between Malaysia and Singapore, offering tax incentives and a robust framework to attract investors. However, the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) has called for a comprehensive blueprint to ensure the zone’s success.

The JS-SEZ agreement, signed on January 6, 2025, during Singapore PM Lawrence Wong’s visit to Malaysia, aims to strengthen economic ties. Spanning 357,128 hectares, it focuses on various flagship zones in Johor, each specializing in key sectors such as renewable energy, aerospace, and digital economy.

ACCCIM President Datuk Ng Yih Pyng emphasized the importance of clear planning to streamline trade and attract investments. The blueprint should address tax incentives, trade facilitation, and inter-governmental collaboration to ensure smooth operations within the SEZ.

The SEZ covers key regions in Johor, including Johor Bahru City Centre (digital economy, health), Forest City (financial services), and Sedenak (education, manufacturing, and logistics). Each zone is tailored to foster specific high-growth sectors.

Malaysia and Singapore have committed to unique fiscal incentives. Malaysia will offer tax rates as low as 5% for corporations and 15% for skilled workers, while Singapore will facilitate funding for companies expanding into the zone.

ACCCIM urged governments to invest in skill development and vocational training to meet the workforce demands of industrial sectors. This ensures businesses in the SEZ have access to a skilled and capable talent pool.

The SEZ aims to attract 100 projects and create 20,000 skilled jobs within its first decade. Malaysia will establish the Invest Malaysia Facilitation Centre in Johor as a one-stop hub for investors, while Singapore plans to create similar facilities to support businesses in the SEZ.

The Johor-Singapore SEZ represents an opportunity to participate in a landmark regional collaboration. By leveraging strategic locations and fiscal incentives, the zone aims to foster innovation, create jobs, and boost trade between the two nations.

The Johor-Singapore SEZ sets ambitious goals to attract high-value investments and create skilled jobs. ACCCIM calls for a clear framework to ensure smooth operations and long-term success.
