Agreements on Economic Zones, Education, Climate, and Regional Collaboration Set to Define Talks
Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong received an official welcome in Putrajaya today during his two-day visit to Malaysia. This visit coincides with the 11th Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat, where both nations aim to bolster diplomatic ties through joint agreements, including a special economic zone project and multiple memoranda of understanding.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong of Singapore arrived in Malaysia for a two-day official visit aimed at strengthening the robust ties between the two neighboring nations. His arrival at the Perdana Putra Complex was marked by an official ceremony and warm greetings from Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Official Welcome Ceremony and Dignitaries Present
At 9.50 am, PM Wong was received by PM Anwar Ibrahim and inspected a ceremonial guard of honor comprising three officers and 103 members of the First Battalion of the Royal Ranger Regiment. Present at the ceremony were Wong’s wife, Loo Tze Lui, Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, and other notable dignitaries.

Leaders’ Retreat: A Cornerstone of Bilateral Relations
The 11th Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat is a high-level platform established in 2007 to discuss shared strategic priorities. This year’s retreat focuses on fostering partnerships, addressing regional challenges, and enhancing mutual prosperity.
Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone and MoUs
Both leaders will oversee the signing of a joint agreement for the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), designed to drive regional growth. Additionally, six memoranda of understanding and a letter of intent cover crucial areas such as education, climate change, women and social welfare, urban development, and combating transnational crimes.
Bilateral trade between Malaysia and Singapore has grown significantly, reaching RM360.12 billion (USD78.59 billion or SGD105.55 billion) from January to November 2024, a 6.7% increase from 2023. This year also marks 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations, showcasing their enduring partnership.
