Paranormal curiosity lands 24-year-old in trouble after trespassing into abandoned building
A 24-year-old Johor man has been sentenced to three months in jail after trespassing into an abandoned building in search of ghosts. The incident, which occurred on December 21, drew attention due to the unusual circumstances surrounding the crime. The Magistrate’s Court delivered the sentence after the man pleaded guilty to the charges.
Muhammad Haikal Mesrol, a car wash assistant, was caught trespassing into an abandoned property in Plaza Wira Court, Johor. His goal? To investigate alleged paranormal activity. The building, owned by a 66-year-old manager, had been barricaded with wooden planks. However, Haikal dismantled the barriers to gain entry, resulting in his arrest.
On December 21, 2024, Haikal entered the abandoned building around 7:10 AM. He broke the wooden planks used to block the entrance, an act which led to a police report by the building’s owner.

The case was heard in the Magistrate’s Court on December 26. Haikal pleaded guilty to the charges under Section 447 of the Penal Code, which deals with trespassing.
Penalties Under Section 447
The Penal Code stipulates penalties of up to six months’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM3,000 (approximately SGD 900), or both for trespassing. Haikal received a three-month sentence, starting immediately after the verdict.
