A 28-year-old delivery rider from Johor Baru lost RM63,826 (SGD 19,137) to an online love scam after falling for a fake WeChat profile in August 2024. The scam unfolded over months of communication, culminating in the victim transferring funds to a fraudster under the guise of helping with medical expenses.

Johor Baru police have issued a warning about the dangers of social media scams after a delivery rider became the latest victim in an elaborate romance fraud. The scam, initiated through WeChat, involved emotional manipulation and fraudulent claims, leading the victim to transfer funds repeatedly over several months.

Emotional Manipulation for Financial Gain

Within 20 days, the fraudster requested financial assistance, citing her mother’s medical expenses. Under pressure and emotional blackmail, the victim made 16 online transactions between August 25 and November 16, 2024, totaling RM63,826 (SGD 19,137).

Discovery Through Reverse Image Search
