In a significant breakthrough against human trafficking, Johor police rescued two Chinese nationals with disabilities, allegedly exploited as beggars by a syndicate operating in Johor Baru. The operation highlights ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks exploiting vulnerable individuals.
On December 22, Johor Baru North police conducted Ops Pintas Mega Tip, resulting in the arrest of a 67-year-old Malaysian man and the rescue of two Chinese nationals, aged 39 and 36, in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, Skudai. The operation followed intelligence suggesting a human trafficking syndicate was exploiting disabled individuals.

Preliminary investigations revealed the victims were transported daily to night markets and eateries in Johor Baru, forced to beg and collect RM50–RM150 per day (~S$15–S$45). The syndicate reportedly began operations in November, exploiting the victims’ vulnerabilities.
Police confiscated a mobile phone, a public transport agency driver’s card, car keys, and a Proton Wira, believed to be used for transporting victims. These items are being analyzed to gather further evidence against the syndicate.
The arrested suspect is being held under a five-day remand (December 23–27) while police investigate charges under Section 12 of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2007. Meanwhile, the victims are placed under a 21-day protection order as per the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (ATIPSOM) Act 2007.

Authorities revealed that similar syndicates have previously exploited disabled individuals in Malaysia, with earnings exceeding RM10,000 (~S$2,997) monthly. The case emphasizes the need for vigilance and international cooperation in combating such crimes.
This case underscores the darker side of human exploitation in the region. With Johor being a popular destination for travelers, ensuring public safety and cracking down on syndicates remain critical. The rescue operation not only saves victims but also sends a strong message against trafficking.
