Lawmakers urge BP Batam and Batam City authorities to resolve Rempang Island tensions.

The escalating conflict on Rempang Island has drawn sharp criticism from Indonesian lawmakers, who are holding BP Batam and the Batam City Government accountable. The conflict, rooted in unresolved relocation disputes, reached a breaking point during clashes on December 17, 2024. Lawmakers are now demanding a thorough investigation and a halt to development until local residents’ rights are safeguarded.

The conflict stems from plans to develop Rempang Eco City, a national strategic project spearheaded by PT Makmur Elok Graha (MEG). Local residents, who have lived on the island for generations, oppose the relocation efforts, citing threats to their livelihoods and cultural heritage.

Mafirion, a member of Indonesia’s House of Representatives (DPR), accused BP Batam and Batam City authorities of neglecting their responsibilities. He questioned why PT MEG was allowed to operate without resolving relocation agreements with local residents. “The government cannot wash its hands of this conflict,” Mafirion asserted.

The lawmaker urged an immediate halt to all development activities on Rempang Island, whether by private entities or the government. “No development should come at the expense of people’s rights,” he stated, echoing concerns about potential human rights violations.

Mafirion called for the formation of an independent investigative team involving the Ministry of Human Rights, the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM), and the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK). He emphasized the need for transparency to uncover the root causes of the violence, which left eight residents injured.
