Tensions escalate in Batam as armed individuals attack protest posts over a national project dispute.
In the early hours of December 18, 2024, chaos unfolded in Rempang Island, Batam, as dozens of armed individuals launched an attack on protest sites against the National Strategic Project (PSN). The violent incident left eight residents injured and vehicles damaged, further igniting tensions around the controversial Rempang Eco-City development.
In a shocking midnight assault, protest posts at Kampung Sembulang Hulu and Sungai Buluh were attacked by individuals armed with sharp weapons, arrows, and blunt objects. The attackers reportedly caused significant property damage and targeted residents standing guard at the posts.
Victims and Injuries
The violent clash resulted in eight injuries:
Four residents suffered severe head wounds.
One individual sustained a broken arm.
Another was hit by an arrow.
Others reported minor injuries.
Additionally, more than ten vehicles were damaged. The injured were rushed to local hospitals for treatment.

The attack is believed to have been instigated after locals confronted individuals suspected of vandalizing banners opposing the PSN project. One of the suspects was detained by residents but later collapsed and was taken to the hospital under police custody.
No Official Response Yet
As of now, neither the Batam Police Chief, Kombes Heribertus Ompunsunggu, nor representatives from PT Makmur Elok Graha (MEG)—the company linked to the project—have issued statements regarding the attack.
Three Key Appeals
In response to the violence, the residents of Kampung Tua Rempang, backed by civil organizations, have made three urgent demands:
1. Presidential Intervention: Request for President Prabowo Subianto and the parliament to halt the Rempang Eco-City project and safeguard the rights of indigenous communities.
2. Police Accountability: Call for the Indonesian National Police to ensure strict legal action against perpetrators of violence.
3. Human Rights Oversight: Urge Komnas HAM to investigate rights violations and implement protection mechanisms for indigenous residents.

The Rempang Eco-City project, part of Indonesia’s National Strategic Project, has faced opposition from indigenous communities who fear displacement and the loss of ancestral land. The December 18 attack adds to a series of conflicts, intensifying calls for justice and fair treatment.
The ongoing conflict in Rempang underscores the challenges of balancing development with indigenous rights. For Singaporeans and international observers, it highlights the broader regional implications of investment-linked disputes in Southeast Asia. These events may influence perceptions of political stability and human rights practices in Batam, a neighboring city to Singapore.
