Indonesia’s transport ministry considers a vital link for seafood exports and regional commerce.
Indonesia’s Ministry of Transport has announced plans to establish a pioneer ferry route between Batam and Johor Bahru. The proposed route aims to boost exports of Indonesian seafood products, particularly from Riau Islands, to Malaysia and international markets.
The Indonesian government, led by the Ministry of Transport and regional leaders, is pushing for the establishment of a direct Batam-Johor Bahru ferry route to improve market access for seafood products and drive economic growth. This initiative comes as part of efforts to streamline sea trade routes and reduce dependency on Singapore for regional exports.
The announcement follows increasing calls from stakeholders, including Riau Islands Governor Ansar Ahmad and Senator Ria Saptarika, to open a direct shipping link between Batam and Johor Bahru.
Deputy Minister of Transport Suntana revealed on December 16, 2024, that discussions are ongoing to establish the Batam-Johor ferry route. This direct link would bypass Singapore, offering faster and more efficient trade between Indonesia and Malaysia.

“Currently, many seafood products go through Singapore before reaching Johor. A direct route will increase efficiency and export profits,” said Suntana during his visit to Batam’s Bintang 99 Port.
The proposed route is expected to benefit local fishermen and seafood exporters in Riau Islands. Senator Ria Saptarika highlighted how the ferry service could elevate the incomes of local fishing communities by providing them with direct access to international markets.
“This will cut the Batam-Singapore-Johor chain, enabling direct exports. It’s a win for our fishermen,” he noted.
The Batam-Johor route aligns with Indonesia’s efforts to strengthen regional trade and stimulate the local economy. By improving market access for seafood and other goods, the initiative is poised to enhance Batam’s role as a trade hub in Southeast Asia.
Wamenhub Suntana emphasized that the route would serve as a “vital artery” for local commodities to go global.
Riau Islands Governor Ansar Ahmad has urged the Ministry of Transport to expedite the project. In response, Suntana confirmed that feasibility studies and bilateral discussions with Malaysia are underway.
“If this route delivers clear economic benefits, we will prioritise its implementation,” Suntana assured.

Apart from trade, the Batam-Johor Bahru route is also expected to boost tourism in the Riau Islands. The new link could attract more Malaysian visitors to Batam while enhancing connectivity for regional travelers.
“Batam will benefit from increased tourism flows, which will complement our economic goals,” added Ria Saptarika.
The proposed Batam-Johor Bahru ferry route represents a strategic opportunity for Indonesia’s seafood industry and regional economy. For Singaporeans and international visitors, the route could mean enhanced trade competition and improved cross-border travel options. With strong support from local and national leaders, the project is expected to deliver economic gains for the Riau Islands.
